Clinical Site Supervisor: Academic Counseling Techniques and Services

I have been able to observe my site supervisor lead classroom lessons in Kindergarten to

2nd grade. She utilizes the Second Step program for social emotional learning lessons and

academic counseling techniques. She conducts formative and summative assessments with the

Devereux Student Strengths Assessment-Second Step Edition. She also conducts classroom

"quizzes" to reiterate the lessons she has taught. Since she works with the younger grades, these

quizzes are often pictures and simply require circling the image that relates to the social

emotional question.

Counseling Intern: Academic Counseling Techniques and Services

I have been able to lead a specific group counseling session called Friendship Club where

we focus on skills building that directly impacts students' academic success. Some of the topics

include listening to others, asking questions, asking for help, dealing with conflict, and accepting

consequences. The curriculum I use comes directly from ASCA's book titled "Group Counseling

with Elementary Students." It is an effective resource series because each topic directly

addresses specific ASCA mindsets and behaviors. During our first session, I have my students

fill out a Student Evaluation Form: Pre-Assessment followed by a Post-Assessment during our

last session. The data gathered from these assessments show whether or not students made

progress and learned from the 8 week group.

Additional Observations and Experiences

We have a North (K-2) and South (3-5) student center that is designated for students who

are emotionally dis-regulated, need a break from class, or a quiet space to complete work. I am

able to spend time in the student centers to help students with calming techniques such deep

breathing, counting, and identifying the emotion they are feeling based on the Zones of
3

Regulation scale. This aids in refocusing them back on their academics so they can rejoin their

classroom lessons and activities.
