Entry Standards
The course is designated for nautical officers and other persons with responsible duties in navigation
work, such as pilots. Those wishing to enter this course should have experience in performing chart and
radar work and should be able to practice all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures
and equipment. They should be familiar with standard computer, including elements such as windows,
trackballs, etc.
Staff Requirements
The qualifications of the instructor are in accordance with the requirements laid down in section A-I/6 of
the STCW Code. All of them have to be thoroughly familiar with the operation of the entire equipment
to be used in the course.
Every Instructor needs to have a valid “Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 Instructor Certificate”, issued by
Transas.
Teaching Aids, Facilities and Equipment
(Does not apply for on-board training)
1. Instructor Manual
2. ECDIS Simulator
3. Bridge Simulator
4. Participants Handout
For the theoretical part of the syllabus, a classroom equipped with whiteboard, overhead projector,
computers and beamers should be available.
For the demonstration of ECDIS, efficient ECDIS simulators have to be available. A moving ship symbol is
recommended in order to demonstrate the generation of alarms.
A bridge simulator would increase the learning effect by demonstrating the interaction of ECDIS with
other navigational equipment such as ARPA and AIS.
Course Certificate
Upon successful completion of the course and assessments, a document is issued certifying that the
holder has successfully completed an “Equipment specific Training Course”. The original, signed and
stamped certificate has to be scanned and kept in the internal records for at least 5 years. The Trainee
will receive the original document as well as a scanned PDF-document via e-mail.
