Introduction
Group Setup
The main goal of this 2-day (16 hours) course, “Hands- on Training Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS”, is to provide
the trainees with knowledge, understanding and proficiency in the use of Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS.
Each trainee may have one PC with Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS software installed. Two trainees sharing one
workstation might increase the learning effect.
During the Route Monitoring training (simulation), the trainees will work a group.

Entry Standards
The course is designated for nautical officers and other persons with responsible duties in navigation
work, such as pilots. Those wishing to enter this course should have experience in performing chart and
radar work and should be able to practice all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures
and equipment. They should be familiar with standard computer, including elements such as windows,
trackballs, etc.

Course Intake Limitations

The course intake is limited by the availability of equipment and ECDIS. Experience shows that the
efficacy of practical training is optimized when the intake does not exceed 8 participants in a classroom
and 6 participants for an on-board training.

Staff Requirements
The qualifications of the instructor are in accordance with the requirements laid down in section A-I/6 of
the STCW Code. All of them have to be thoroughly familiar with the operation of the entire equipment
to be used in the course.
Every Instructor needs to have a valid “Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 Instructor Certificate”, issued by
Transas.
Teaching Aids, Facilities and Equipment
(Does not apply for on-board training)

1. Instructor Manual
2. ECDIS Simulator
3. Bridge Simulator
4. Participants Handout
For the theoretical part of the syllabus, a classroom equipped with whiteboard, overhead projector,
computers and beamers should be available.
For the demonstration of ECDIS, efficient ECDIS simulators have to be available. A moving ship symbol is
recommended in order to demonstrate the generation of alarms.
A bridge simulator would increase the learning effect by demonstrating the interaction of ECDIS with
other navigational equipment such as ARPA and AIS.

Course Certificate
Upon successful completion of the course and assessments, a document is issued certifying that the
holder has successfully completed an “Equipment specific Training Course”. The original, signed and
stamped certificate has to be scanned and kept in the internal records for at least 5 years. The Trainee
will receive the original document as well as a scanned PDF-document via e-mail.

Preparation of the Training Course

Every Training Center has to assist the trainees well in advance. Easing the travel by recommending
hotels, assistance with visa arrangements or the organization of transport are just a few examples.
In order to avoid poor preparation, the “Training Checklist.doc” has to be followed.
Every trainee shall receive a name sign (name sign.doc), a note pad, a ball-pen and the “Quick Reference
Guide Navi-Sailor 4000” (QuickGuide4000.pdf)
A welcome sign at the entrance of the Training Center (Welcome sign.ppt) might be a nice idea.
Upon completion, every trainee should fill out a feedback form (Feedback.xls) which has to be evaluated
and kept in the records for five years.
