From above table

Weight of stagings = 1268.75+1110.45375
= 2379.20375 kN
Weight of empty container = 850.725+1735.5+1417.875+552.8415+257.175+174.54
= 4988.6565 kN
Hence, Weight of Container + 1/3 weight of staging
= 4988.6565+2379.20375/3 = 5781.72 kN

7.2 Center of Gravity of Empty Container

Height of C.G. of empty container from top of footings will be

Unit Unit C.G from Base slab Unit

Roof Slab 6.425 m
Roof Beams 6.2 m
Circular wall 3.175 m
Gallery -0.075 m
Base slab -0.125 m
Base slab Beams -0.54 m

Height of CG is obtained from following formula.

H = (W1h1+…+Wnhn)/(W1+…+Wn)
= 2.31 m above Base slab of tank
Hence, height of CG from top of footing will be 2.31+9.6 m=11.91m

7.3 Parameters of Spring model

Weight of water 12000 kN
Hence mass of water, m = 12000000
= 1223241.6 kg

Page 4 of 87
Project No:- 7104 Design of 1200 Cu.m ESR at
Gokul Shirgaon Industrial Area, Kolhapur

Depth of water ,h =5.4m.

Inner diameter of tank, D = 17m
Hence, for h/D = 5.4/17 = 0.32
m i /m = 0.350 mi = 428134.56 kg
m c /m = 0.600 mc = 733944.95 kg
h i /h = 0.375 hi = 2.03 m
h i * /h = 1.125 hi*= 6.08 m
h c /h = 0.550 hc = 2.97 m
h c * /h = 1.125 hc*= 6.08 m

ms = 589370.48 kg

7.4 Lateral stiffness of stagings

Lateral stiffness of staging is defined as the force required to applied at the CG of tank so
as to get corresponding deflection.
Hence, in STAAD- Pro a rigid link is modelled above stagging upto C.G calculated below
2.31 m
As per definition a 100 kN force is applied at C.G & corresponding deflection is noted
The deflection found as 0.002197 m Therefore, lateral stiffness of frame = 100/0.002197
Equals = 45516.6 kN/m

7.5 Time Period

Time period of impulsive mode,

Ti = 0.939 sec

Time period of convective mode

For h/D =0.31 Cc = 3.9

Tc = 5.134 sec

Page 5 of 87
Project No:- 7104 Design of 1200 Cu.m ESR at
Gokul Shirgaon Industrial Area, Kolhapur

7.6 Design horizontal Seismic Coefficient

Design horizontal seismic coefficient for impulsive mode,

Since staging has special moment restisting system frames (SMRF) R is taken as 4
Sa/g = 1.065
(Ah) i = 0.03195

Design horizontal seismic coefficient for convective mode,

Sa/g = 0.250
(Ah) c = 0.00750

7.7 Base Shear

Base shear at the base of stagings, in Impulsive mode

Vi = (Ah)i(mi+ms)g
= 318.92 kN
Similarly, base shear in convective mode,
Vc = (Ah)c(mc)g
= 54.00 kN
Total Base shear at the bottom of staging
V = Square root (Vi2 + Vc2)
= 323.46 kN

7.8 Base Moment

Overturning moment at the base of staging, in impulsive mode,

Mi * = (Ah) i [m i (h i * +h s )+m s h cg ]g
= 4942.89 kN.m
Similarly, overturning moment in convective mode,
Mc * = (Ah) c m c (h c * +h s ) g
= 954.45 kN.m
Total overturning moment at the base of staging,
Mi * = Square root (Mi*2 + Mc*2)
= 5034.20 kN.m

7.9 Pressure due to Wall Inertia

Pressure on wall due to its inertia,

p ww = (A h ) i tp m g

Page 6 of 87
Project No:- 7104 Design of 1200 Cu.m ESR at
Gokul Shirgaon Industrial Area, Kolhapur

= 0.160 kN/m2
This pressure is uniformly distributed along the wall height.

7.10 Equivalent Linear Pressure Distribution

For stress analysis of tank wall, It is convenient to have linear pressure distribution along
wall height. Equivalent linear distribution for impulsive hydrodynamic pressure
distribution will be as follows

Base shear due to impulsive liquid mass per unit circumferential length,

qi = [(A h ) i m i g]/[ p D/2]

= 5.03 kN/m
Pressure at botttom and top is given by,
ai = q i /h 2 *(4h-6h i )
2
= 1.63 kN/m
2
bi = q i /h *(6h i- 2h)
2
= 0.2 kN/m
Equivalent linear impulsive pressure distribution is shown below:

0.2

1.63

Similarly, equivalent linear distribution for convective pressure can be obtained as follows:

Base shear due to impulsive liquid mass per unit circumferential length,

qc = [(A h ) c m c g]/[ p D/2]

= 2.02 kN/m
Pressure at botttom and top is given by,
ac = q c /h 2 *(4h-6h c )
= 0.26 kN/m2
bc = q c /h 2 *(6h c- 2h)
= 0.5 kN/m2
Equivalent linear convective pressure distribution is shown below:
The pressure distribution for impulsive & convective have been applied in Staad Pro

pz = 0.6*(Vz )2 N/m2

DESIGN BASIS REPORT

1 Modelling on STAAD-Pro

The ESR is wholly modelled in STAAD-Pro software as follows

For Modelling in STAAD Geometry is taken as per Tender/ Design requirements
indicated in Introduction part of this report. Beam-Column skeleton is prepared using line
elements whereas Tank walls and Base slabs have been modelled as Plate Elements. For
roof slab considerable loads are taken in STAAD model.
The Prepared STAAD model Geometry is shown below.

are applied and considered for Stagging design.
Slaushing effect of water during earthquake is taken into account and Convective and
Impulsive forces due to water are calculated in section 7 and applied in STAAD

B2 For Lateral Wind Load manual wind analysis is done as shown in section 8 w.r.t. the IS
875 criteria and total overturning moments are obtained.

Maximum of Wind load or Dead load is checked for overturning.

C) Load Combinations
For Design Considerations

With Respect to IS 1893 Part 1, IS 875 Part 3 & IS 456 following Design load
combinations are taken.
