CONCEPT OF DIGITAL LABORATORY

DR.C.V.NARASIMHA MURTHY

Bioinformatics is defined as the application of tools of computation and analysis to the

capture and interpretation of biological data. It is an interdisciplinary field, which harnesses
computer science, mathematics, physics, and biology .

Bioinformatics Laboratory is a large research group at the Faculty of Computer and

Information Science, which performs research in data science. We like to combine machine
learning and data visualization, and craft techniques for exploratory data analysis and
explainable artificial intelligence.

How to encourage the move to the digital lab of the future?

For companies to complete a data transition and achieve the digital lab environment successfully,
Leverage clean data intelligence for quick and easy access to information on the go by utilizing
FAIR data principles in the R&D process.

 Adopt risk-based validation practices to ensure manufacturing protocols address data

quality and reliability.
 Foster a data culture by collaborating with internal and external partners to extend
knowledge and data networks.
 Add lab intelligence to existing electronic data with data analysis algorithms.

This can be achieved by following three stages in the image below on the voyage to achieving
digital transformation:

Value creation and opportunities with digital labs
workflow efficiency and product quality as a top priority they would like to improve on
in 2021. With emerging technologies such as advanced analytics, robotics and automation
providing pharma leaders with the potential to revolutionize digital lab environments,
respondents of the survey also commented that these digital initiatives are likely to lead the way
in ensuring better quality and compliance. This can be through reducing manual errors and
variability, as well as allowing for faster and effective resolutions of problems.

Digital Biology Laboratory (DBL) is a research and education powerhouse in

bioinformatics and computational biology. DBL works on development of novel
computational methods, algorithms, software and information systems, as well as on broad
applications of these tools and other informatics resources for various biological and
medical problems. We have conducted research in many areas of computational biology
and bioinformatics, including protein structure prediction and modeling, protein post-
translational modifications, protein/RNA localization prediction, single-cell data analyses,
computational systems biology, and bioinformatics applications in human, microbes, and
plants. DBL is adaptable and able to recognize new opportunities and explore new areas in
bioinformatics, maintaining a cutting-edge and novel research program. In recent years,
DBL focuses on the interface between bioinformatics and deep learning.
Research at DBL has been supported by NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA, US Army, US
Geological Survey, United Soybean Board, Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council,
Missouri Life Science Trust Fund, Monsanto Research Fund, Cerner, and National Center
for Soybean Biotechnology.
