Result Ryof the green component (Chlorophyll) Ry of the yellow component (Xanthophyll) = Ryof the red component (Carotene) =... Precautions Use a very fine capillary tube or syringe for spotting the mixture. Allow the spot to dry before putting another drop. Spot should be small but rich in the mixture, Do not allow the paper to curl, It should hang straight and erect. Do not disturb the jar after putting the filter paper and keep the jar covered. ‘The spot should not dip in the solvent. Use 2 good quality HB pencil to draw the reference line. EXPERIMENT E-2 To separate Cu?* and Cd* ions present in the given mixture by paper chromatography. Theory : The separation of Cu?* and Ca** ions present in an inorganic mixture is based on the fact that the cations move with different speed on developing with a particular developing solvent. The spots are then made visible by using a suitable visualizing reagents. Cu?* and Cd?* ions given characteristics colours. Apparatus : Same as in Experiment E- Materials : + Chlorides of the given cations to form 1% aqueous sol these cations are present as their respective chlorides + Developing Soivent : Ethanol + 5M HCI of the ratio of 9 : 1 by volume. * Visualizing reagent : A 1% sodium sulphide solution or colourless (NH,)2S solution prepared by passing HyS gas through dilute NH,OH solution or 0-05% solution (\v/») of dithizone in chloroform. or HCI for dissolving the given mixture so Procedure * Take a Whatman filter paper No. 1 about 3 em wide and having a length equal to the height of the jar * Draw a reference line with pencil about 3 cm from one end. * Prepare 1% solution of the mixture in dilute HCl acid (or if chlorides of the cations are given then prepare 1% aqueous solution of the mixture). * Puta drop of the mixture solution in the centre of the reference line. Let it dry in air. Put an other drop on the same spot and dry again, Repeat 2-3 times, * Suspend the filter paper strip vertically in a gas jar containing the developing solvent in such a way that the pencil line (and the spot) remains about 2 cm above the developing solvent level, Cover the jar with the clock glass and keep it undisturbed, * The solvent begin to rise upwards gradually and reaches near the upper end of the filter paper strip. ake the filter paper strip out of the jar and mark the distance that the solvent has risen on the paper with a pencil Golvent front), © Dry the developed chromatogram in the air. ei * ae!
