Learning Activity No. 3

(Lesson 10)

Instruction: Answer the question in three to five sentences.

What is populism? Name one political leader whom you consider to be a populist. What
is his/her most significant populist idea or view?

Populism is a term used to describe a variety of political ideas and viewpoints

that appeal to the masses or "ordinary people" and typically highlight a conflict between
the masses and the "elite." Politically, populism lacks many commonalities, and its
proponents can come from either side of the political aisle. Donald Trump was regarded
as a populist President because he was a political outsider who oppressed both political
parties. Trump's vows for a military that is "so huge and so strong and so tremendous"
that he claims no one will tamper with it reassure people who are concerned about
terrorist threats and America's standing in the world. He has demanded the destruction
of the Islamic State without specifying how to do it and highlights his opposition to the
2003 war of Iraq.
