PARTS OF SPEECH
1. A noun is a word that names person, place, concept, or object.
She bought a pair of shoes. (thing)
I have a pet. (animal)
2. Pronouns are the words you substitute for specific nouns
 Is this the boy who won the first prize? (Relative pronoun)
 That is my mom. (Possessive pronoun)
3. Adjectives are the words that describe nouns.
 The place we visited yesterday was serene.
 The weather is pleasant today.
4. Verbs are words that describe specific actions.
 She plays cricket every day.
 My friends visited me last week. 7

PARTS OF SPEECH
1. An adverb is a word that describes an adjective, a verb, or another adverb.
 Did you come here to buy an umbrella? (Adverb of place)
 Can you please come quickly? (Adverb of manner)
2. Prepositions tell you the relationship between the other words
 The child hid his birthday presents under his bed.
 Mom asked me to go to the store near my school.
3. Conjunctions link your ideas (words, phrases, clauses) together
 Meera and Jasmine had come to my birthday party.
 Jane did not go to work as she was sick.
4. Interjections are words that are used to convey strong emotions or feelings
 Wow! What a wonderful work of art.
 Yippee! We won the match. 8

Countable and Uncountable Nouns


 Nouns can be countable or uncountable.
Countable nouns can be counted, e.g. an apple, two apples, three
apples, etc.
Uncountable nouns cannot be counted, e.g. air, rice, water, etc.

Countable and uncountable nouns in sentences:


I'm making a cup of tea.
There's some money on the table.
Have we got any bread?
How many chairs do we need?
How much milk have we got?

•The word Tense is derived from Latin word
“tempus” which means time.

•A verb indicates the time of an action, event


or condition by changing its form.

Conjugate on your Way


•I have wrote a book that needs editing
•The forms have already went to the Registrar’s office
•I should have did the right thing by apologizing
•The mail carrier hasn’t came yet
•I seen you at the musical event.

If you say or write nonstandard verb forms like the ones in the
sentences above, you will likely to be judged by the conjugation
of your verb forms, not the content of your character

Tense refers to the ability of verbs to indicate the time of an action

To talk about generalities or facts
Diya lives in a big house
To talk about circumstances that don’t change

To talk about habits or actions that repeat

To talk about things that will happen in the near future

To give directions or instructions
to make a cake, first you measure the flour, then you crack two eggs, then

The Present Continuous


The present continuous is used to describe actions or events
that are happening at the moment (right now) or are ongoing
Ahmed is watching a movie
Subhash is reading a novel
Also used when someone or something is bothering us
I am not learning anything
You are always arriving late to class!

The Past Simple


The past simple is used to describe past actions and events
that are completely finished

He died in 2012 in a car accident.

I went to the shopping mall last week.

Rose got married last month.

The Past Continuous


We use the past continuous when we need to describe past actions
and events that lasted over a period of time
I was running when I fell.
They were watching TV while I was washing the dishes.
Someone rang the bell when he was having a bath.
Was he using an app for learning English?
