Sensory Processing Play Activity:
➢ Gustatory - Sense of Taste Sensory Activities:
Taste is a very important sense due to its role in helping us determine the flavours of foods and
other substances. In fact, our ability to taste has historically been linked to our survival, as our sense
of taste gives us an indication of whether a food is safe to eat or not.
Task: In this Activity, kids will learn more about 6 tastes: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter and Spicy.

Parents can first give various items for tasting like Lemon/Grape/Orange/Tamarind water (Sour),
Sugar water or any Sweet or chocolate (Sweet), Salt water or Salt biscuit (Salt), Bitter gourd or Cocoa
or Green-tea or Plain coffee water (Bitter) and Spicy popcorn / Pickle (Spicy). You can opt to give any
similar tasting food items which are not in the above mentioned list but ensure the kids are prone to
only mild and gentle tastes.

Then you can blindfold the kid and again ask the kid to taste and identify the items they have tasted
before without seeing them. In this Activity, kids will learn about their sense of taste.

Brainstorming: Parents can discuss with kids on below questions:

What taste did they like?

How does temperature affect taste? Some Foods Taste Different Hot or Cold. Most people prefer their soda cold and their
coffee hot, and a new study shows that this could be because changes in the temperature of foods and drinks have an effect on
the taste intensity of sour, bitter and astringent tastes.
