Reflection for my Micro-teaching

My first micro-teaching class was with the upper-intermediate group of students in

the Yildiz Tehnical University, Faculty of Education on 14 November 2022. The class
comprises of the students between 20 and 30.
I exchanged greetings with the students before I started my micro-teaching. Then, I
shared the topic which I was going to demonstrate with them and asked a few
questions in order to ensure their participation in the topic. I created a word file by
giving explanations and examples of all the words related to the subject with
providing visuals, and I shared the file in the google classroom before starting the
lesson. In this way, I thought that it would help them to have prior knowledge about
which subject we will learn, as well as to help them understand and participate in the
lesson.

Since each student has different learning abilities, I tried to explain the position by
combining several abilities rather than just one. I presented a video about Air Travel
to them and explained each word by pausing the video, giving both explanation and
example. The video helped students learn how to pronounce words, while helping
them visually grasp which word was what. I think that such an expression is positive
for the students, I could only make their participation in the lesson more active by
asking them to give examples or asking questions about the words while explaining
the subject.

After I finished the lecture, I had them put the words into use with an activity I had
prepared beforehand. The activity consists of a wheel and I have added all the words I
told about air travel. I had planned a competition between two groups, group 1 and g
roup 2 based on the lesson. I chose a volunteer for each group, they don't see the word
that comes out when I turn the wheel. Groupmates have to explain the word using
examples or explanations. Whichever of the groups tells first and the volunteer
guesses, that group gets a point. After saying a few words, I mixed the groups and
ensured that there was interaction between the whole class.

After the activity was over, I reminded the students that they could practice the words
they learned with the worksheet I shared on google classroom. Thus, they succeed in
transferring what I taught that day from short term memory to long term memory.

My microteaching was not very easy; however, I must appreciate that I learnt much
more than I could imagined. I gained immense experience in preparing lesson plans
and teaching with using some helpful guidelines. To summarize everything, I can say
that this being my first micro-teaching has taught me a lot. I realized how hard a
process it is to prepare lessons for students. I understood the importance of finding
lectures and activities for each lesson according to the different learning abilities of
the students. I think the feedback given by our teacher is very useful and I think that I
will be able to prepare more easily and complete my deficiencies by considering all
the micro-teaching things in the future.
