Chapter (2)
Differentiation

2
Tangent Lines:

3
Derivative:

The derivative of the function f at the point x = a is

defined as

provided the limit exists. If the limit exists, we say that f

is differentiable at x = a.

4
Example (1):

Solution:

5
The derivative of the function f is the function f’ given by

The domain of f is the set of all x’s for which this limit
exists.

Keep in mind that the value of the derivative function

at a point is the slope of thetangent line at that point.
The process of computing a derivative is called
differentiation. Further, f is differentiable on an open
interval I if it is differentiable at every point in I .
6
Alternative Derivative Notations

If we write y = f (x), the following are all alternatives for

denoting the derivative:

The expression

is called a differential operator and tells us to take the

derivative of whatever expression follows.
7
If f is differentiable at x = a, then f is continuous at x = a.

Note that : if a function is not continuous at a point, then

it cannot have a derivative at that point.

It also turns out that functions are not differentiable at

any point where their graph has a “sharp” corner, as is
the case for f (x) = |x| at x = 0.

8
Derivative Of Constant Function:

For any constant c,

(The tangent line to a

horizontal line is the same
horizontal line.)

9
Derivative Of Power Function:

(The tangent line to the line

y = x is a line of slope one)

10
The table presents a short list of
derivatives calculated previously
either as examples or in the
exercises using the limit definition.

• The Power Rule (General Form):

Example (3):

(a) (b)

Note that each derivative can be rewritten:

(a) (b)

13
Example (4):

Solution:

14
Note:

Be careful here to avoid a common error:

The power rule says to subtract 1 from the exponent

(even if the exponent is negative).

Some of derivative Rules:

Product Rule:

Example (6):

Solution:

Note that:

Generally, the derivative of a quotient is not the quotient

of the derivatives.
