Introduction
We present our Shire Calendar for the Anno Domini 2021, which is 1498 in the Shire
Reckoning (S.R.), and 77 of the Fourth Age. In this calendar the Gregorian dates are translated
into the dates of the Shire Reckoning according to the Reform of Our Calendar (read about it
on Elendilion) which is based upon Tolkien's calculations published in Ch. Scull's and W. G.
Hammond's A Reader's Companion (note that our 25 December is the equivalent of the 2nd
Yule or New Year's Day as it was in the Catholic reckoning in mediaeval England). Our
calendar’s order is borrowed from the publication of Steve Pillinger from 1981 to 1982 about
which you can read on Tolkien Gateway.
Let us also remember that in The Lord of the Rings spring consists of February, March and
April, summer of May, June and July, autumn of August, September and October, and winter
consists of November, December and January. So mid-June is more or less Midsummer and
mid-December is more or less Midwinter. If so, we propose what follows: 25 January =
the Erukyermë (‘at the beginning of each spring’), 25 June = the Erulaitalë (‘in the middle of
summer’), 24 October = the Eruhantalë (‘at the end of each autumn’). Other special holidays
from Middle-earth are: 20 March (= 25 Rethe = New Year’s Day in the Reunited Kingdom),
31 March (= 6 Astron = Yestarë or New Year’s Day in the Imladris Calendar of the Elves),
16 September (= 22 Halimath, Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday) and 26 October (= 2 Blotmath,
the Day of the Horn of the Mark, a Buckland holiday). The six seasons or astar in the Calendar
of Imladris are: Yestarë (‘New Year’s Day’, 31 March), Tuilë (‘spring’, 1 April to 24 May), Lairë
(‘summer’, 25 May to 4 August), Yávië (‘autumn’, 5 August to 27 September), Enderi
(‘middle-days’, 28-30 September) Quellë (‘fading’, 1 October to 23 November), Hrívë
(‘winter’, 24 November to 3 February), Coirë (‘stirring’, 4 February to 29 March), Yestare
(‘the last day’, 30 March). These holidays are printed in green and they have an asterisk in our
calendar.
In 2021, let us also remember about the Tolkienist anniversaries like 3 January (on this day
J. R. R. Tolkien was born in 1892), 22 March (Ronald and Edith’s wedding in 1916), 25 March
(Tolkien Reading Day), 16 May (Saint Brendan’s Day, the holiday of our Fraternitas Sancti
Brendani or our Christian Brotherhood of Elendilion), 2 September (when Professor J. R. R.
Tolkien died in 1973), 8 December (when our Elendili community was founded in 2003), and
27 December (the day of St. John Evangelist, the patron saint of J. R. R. Tolkien). These
anniversaries are printed in blue.
The Calendar with three illustrations presenting Tom Loback’s art from Middle-earth can be
downloaded in the PDF format. My great thanks to Susan Ryan, Tom Loback’s wife, for her
permission to publish her late husband’s artwork in our calendar.
Note the use of the Elvish letters and numerals (in the decimal system) according to the
Tengwar mode for Westron (English). The key for the numbers can be found below.
