PROJECT DRAFT

Students:
 Alan Sanchez
 Cristhian Chanamé
Cristian: Hi Alan
Alan: Hi Cristhian. How are you doing?
Cristian: Not very well actually.
Alan: Why?
Cristian: These days I've had to get up early to do some college work and I
haven't slept very well.
Alan: Oh well that's not good the other day I read in an article that sleep is
important for many reasons. For example:
Main reasons:
1. Improved productivity and concentration: Sleep has links to several
brain functions, including: concentration, productivity and cognition. One
example that can be given is that children's sleep patterns can have a direct
impact on their behavior and academic performance.
2. Better calorie regulation: When a person does not get enough sleep, it
can interfere with the body's ability to properly regulate food intake. It is
established that sleep patterns have an effect on the hormones responsible
for appetite.
3. Increased athletic performance: Appropriate sleep for adults is
between 7 and 9 hours per night, and athletes can benefit from up to 10
hours. Consequently, sleep is as important for athletes as consuming
sufficient calories and nutrients. One of the reasons for this requirement is
that the body recovers during sleep. Other benefits include: better
performance intensity, more energy, better coordination, among others.

Cristian: I also read about other reasons in a magazine, like:

4. Greater social and emotional intelligence: Sleep is linked to people's
emotional and social intelligence. If you do not get enough sleep, you are
more likely to have problems recognizing other people's emotions and
expressions.
5. Prevention of depression: The association between sleep and mental
health has been the subject of research for a long time. One conclusion is
the existence of a link between lack of sleep and depression. A study
appearing in JAMA Psychiatry examines patterns of death by suicide over
a 10-year span. It concludes that lack of sleep is a contributing factor in
many of these deaths. Another study suggests that people with sleep
disorders, such as insomnia, are likely to show signs of depression.
Alan: And let's not even talk about the consequences. For example:
Consequences:
1. Inactive brain: A tired brain is a diminished brain. Those individuals
who sleep less have more mental dullness, so they will make more mistakes
than people who get adequate rest.
2. It affects reflexes: According to a study published in the journal Nature,
after going 24 hours without sleep, our cognitive and motor performance is
equal to that of someone who has drunk five glasses of alcohol.
3. Risk of heart attack: Lack of sleep can lead to increased blood pressure
and higher levels of inflammation-related chemicals, which play a key role
in heart disease.
Cristian: However, I think the most harmful is:
4. Psychiatric disorders: Long-term extreme sleep deprivation can lead to
a number of psychiatric disorders. Some people suffering from prolonged
periods of sleep deprivation have experienced symptoms including
disorientation, paranoia, and hallucinations. These types of symptoms can
sometimes be confused or associated with schizophrenia.
Alan: Well, you're right about that.
Cristian: Well Alan, I have to go, I have some homework to do. Nice
chatting with you.
Alan: Nice chatting with you too Cristian and I hope you solve your
problem. Bye
Cristian: Bye
