Very early in the morning,
while it was still dark,
Jesus got up, left the house,
and went off to a solitary place,
where He prayed.

Jesus prays in a solitary place.

EMPLOYEES’ RETREAT 2022

A Time for Prayer … Silence … Communion …

Following Christ’s example (cf: Mt 1:35), every Christian is invited to go

to a solitary place — detached from the world of today — to pause, to
ponder, and to pray.

As a Catholic Dominican education institution, Colegio de San Juan

de Letran, is committed to accompanying its mission-partners as
they seek God in their daily lives; to discern who they are and how
they will live as preachers of the Word of God.

We invite you, dear Letran personnel, across all departments and

colleges, to take time away for prayer, reflection, discernment, and
community-building — of a thriving faith community in campus.

This Spiritual Exercise offers a wide

variety of retreat experiences which
incorporate elements of Dominican
Spirituality — that is Laudare (to
praise), Benedicere (to bless) and
Praedicare (to preach).

While on retreat, participants may explore themes around God’s

eternal love, family and community, searching for ones’ identity, sense
of mission & purpose, cultivating virtues, forgiveness and
reconciliation, and greater self-awareness.

Everything is geared towards the fullness of life that Christ himself

promised (John 10:10). To attain this, we are all invited to continually
beg for His grace — openness, humility, faith, hope, and love.

5
PILGRIMS OF HOPE

May the God of hope fill you with all joy

and peace in believing, so that by the power
of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
ROMANS 15:13

What happens on a Retreat ?

Retreats provide a space to pause, rest — a break from routine.
Throughout the experience, retreatants will engage in diverse
opportunities for prayer, reflection, dialogue and sharing.

Your retreat may include

prepared talks and reflections
offered by a retreat master/
facilitator.

The Retreatants receive time to

prayerfully reflect on the themes
of a talk or sharing; to
discern and unpack possible
ways by which those themes are active in their own life as teachers,
staff, family members, mission-partners — particularly as Letranites.

During rests or breaks, you may enjoy journaling, walking, or sitting

quietly. You will spend time in prayer through guided meditative
exercises and communal reflection. Following some quiet reflection
time, small group sessions provide an opportunity for peer sharing
and conversation. Hence, your active participation and willingness is
so much desired, and highly appreciated.

6
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
(also known as Confession or Penance) is
also available to those who wish
to renew their relationship with
God — the very reason why we
are spending time for retreats.
Spiritual direction can also be a
great experience when there are
guides available.

Let it be said that: Only you, with the help of God’s grace, can make
this spiritual experience worthy of remembrance. We are counting on
your full and conscious participation; there is a time for everything
(Ecclesiastes 3:1), now is your time with and for God.

RETREAT BE-ATTITUDES

Blessed are those who are in their own bed

at the lights out hour.

Blessed are those who do not leave

the retreat facility during the retreat.

for they shall enjoy the whole weekend.

Blessed are the peacemakers for they are the friends of all.

Blessed are those who report any injuries

for they shall be healed quickly.

7

for they shall find support.

CALERUEGA

Close to Nature … Closer to God …

Caleruega Philippines was then built in 1995, located at Brgy.
Kaylaway, Batulao, Nasugbu, Batangas. Caleruega is a house of
prayer and renewal.

It is open to activities like retreats, recollections, prayer and renewal

workshops, study, research, youth camps, marriage and family
encounter celebrations, skills training, leadership seminars, art, music,
and liturgy workshops and environment and agriculture-related
activities.

8
Why Caleruega?

It is named after the birthplace of Santo Domingo de Guzman,

founder of the Order of Preachers. Wishing to remember and honor
the legacy of their founder, the Filipino Dominicans built Caleruega
with the hopes of becoming,

… like
Caleruega in Spain, a birthplace —
a Genesis for people speaking to and of God…

Experience Silence in the Beauty of God’s Creation

Silence, solitude, harmony, the enchantment of creation, the freedom

of light, and the passion for God’s word, this is Caleruega — the
cradle of preachers, the cornerstone of revelation and inspiration, of
discipleship and apostleship, of fullness of truth and grace. Hence,
group singing, laughter, or other activities that involve some levels of
noise are limited to the venues assigned to our group so we must not
intrude others’ privacy and solitude.

The refectory, chapel or prayer halls, and paseo grounds which are
shared by all Caleruega visitors; thus, it must be kept noise-free.

1 KINGS 19

12
As I begin, I remember …
† To ask for the grace to become still … to be quiet — both
interiorly and exteriorly.
† To take time to relax, to settle into my room, the retreat
house, and my own inner space.
† To ask for the gift or grace of deep confidence and trust in
God's loving care for me.
† To be grateful for God's invitation to "come away awhile and
rest" and for the gift of being able to be here in response to
that invitation.
† To take some time to consider how God is inviting me to
schedule my formal prayer periods during this retreat ...
how often and for what period of time?

As I enter a time of retreat …

I begin with a deep faith and generosity: faith that God
wants to communicate very personally with me; and
generosity and openness on my part, regardless of where I
have been in my life, no matter how closed I may have been
in the past.

I come with my past experiences, my present needs, my gifts

and weaknesses, and my hopes and desires for the future.
Aware of my experiences and needs, I know that God too has
desires for me . . .

Disposition Setting
As I begin this retreat … I might reflect on my life in the last
year or so as guided by these prompts:

13
1. What graces have I received since my last retreat?
Or in my recent past?

2. Have there been events or circumstances that have

significantly affected my life? ... in my family? ... my
community? ... my ministry or work? ... my health or that
of someone love? ... births or deaths? ... joys or
suffering?

3. How would I describe my relationship with God these

days? By what name would I call God today?

4. How do I pray? How often do I pray?

5. Has God already started my retreat weeks ago by

touching me deeply, by some word of scripture, some
image? If so, go back to it as a gift to be further
treasured.

Anchor Points for

PERSONAL SILENT PRAYER

PREPARATION: Before you go to prayer …

▪ Be in touch with current mood, feeling, state.

▪ Be aware of the grace you are begging for.
▪ Prepare your prayer matter (prayer points, Gospel reading, etc.)
▪ Decide on time and place for praying (this is crucial)

ENTRY INTO PRAYER: As you go into prayer …

▪ Go to your place of prayer.

▪ Make yourself comfortable and slowly come to be still.

14
▪ Make a very slow, deliberate Sign of the Cross.
▪ Ask the Holy Spirit to help you pray… Relax ... Breathe ...
▪ Sense the way you are present...to your surroundings…
to yourself.…your inner world...
▪ Begin to notice … emotions, thoughts as they
arise...practice letting go…don't get hooked…
just allow them to be...
▪ Awaken to God's presence...

PRAYER PROPER: Proceed to praying the prayer matter …

▪ Make use of the prayer points given

▪ Various methods of prayer are possible (sample on this later)

EXIT FROM PRAYER: As you end your time of prayer …

▪ Gently, quietly bring your prayer together,

making a simple prayer from your heart to God
▪ Say a slow "Our Father" or "Glory Be" …
▪ Make a slow sign of the Cross …
▪ Slowly leave your prayer place, grateful to God for
spending time with you

REVIEW OF PRAYER: A little later, and in a different place…

▪ Recall the prayer period and replay the highlights …

▪ Relish the emotions you felt during your solitude.
▪ Ask yourself the following:

✓ "Was it good to be at prayer, or not? Why?"

✓ "What did you experience in prayer?"
✓ "How was God communicating with you?"
✓ "What were your reactions/ responses?"
✓ "How did you feel at the end of prayer?"

ASK AND YOU
COMMUNAL PRAYER PROCESS

GATHER
The first part of prayer needs to help the community gather and
become aware of their relationship to God and each other. This can
be achieved with the aid of actions, gestures, music, singing, proclamations,
litanies, invocations, call to prayer sounds — bell and gong, etc.

LISTEN
The next movement of the prayer gives those now gathered a
chance to hear the scriptures or stories which allow us to reflect
on how God is active in our lives. Readings, videos, personal stories,
witness reflections, music, songs, psalms, gestures, and silence are some
elements which might be included.

RESPOND
The third movement of prayer reminds us that it’s not enough to
just hear the word of God, we must keep it. How will we respond
to our awareness of God continually loving us unconditionally?
Spontaneous and composed prayers, intercessory prayer, the Lord’s Prayer,
psalms, music, actions, or gestures are options.

SEND FORTH
The final movement of prayer sends us forth with a renewed
sense of our mission to live the Gospel each day. Prayer helps
us to focus on the big picture but also the simple ways that each
of us needs to be a disciple to those around us. Spontaneous and
composed prayers, music, actions and gestures, blessings, commissioning rites,
commitment rituals, exchanging a sign of peace can be utilized.

Here comes with power

the Lord God, who rules by his strong arm;
here is his reward with him,

Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;

Who has cupped in his hand the waters of the sea,
and marked off the heavens with a span?
Who has held in a measure the dust of the earth,
weighed the mountains in scales

Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,

Whom did he consult to gain knowledge?
Who taught him the path of judgment,
or showed him the way of understanding?

Behold, the nations,

Christ, hear us.

▪ Send your Spirit, the longed-for guest of our hearts, — and
grant that we may never offend him.

▪ You rose from the dead and are seated at the right hand of
God, — make intercession for us always with the Father.

▪ Through your Spirit unite us with yourself, — so that trial or

persecution or danger may never separate us from your love.

▪ May we welcome each other, — in the way you have welcomed

us, to the glory of God.

The Lord’s Prayer – Our Father . . . (to be sung)

Let us pray.

Loving Father, on this day of our retreat,

THE SACRAMENT OF SIMPLE
C O NF E SSI O N
RECONCILIATION GUIDE

The basic requirement for a good confession is to have the intention

of returning to God like the "prodigal son" (Luke 15:11-32) and to
acknowledge our sins with true sorrow before the priest.

SIN IN MY LIFE

Modern society has lost a sense of

sin. As a Catholic follower of Christ,
I must make an effort to recognize
sin in my daily actions, words, and
omissions.

The Gospels show how important is

the forgiveness of our sins. Lives of
saints prove that the person who grows in holiness has a stronger
sense of sin, sorrow for sins, and a need for Reconciliation with God
thru the Sacrament of Penance or Confession.

THE DIFFERENCES OF SINS

As a result of Original Sin, human nature is weakened. Baptism, by

imparting the life of Christ's grace, takes away Original Sin, and turns
us back toward God. The consequences of this weakness and the
inclination to evil persist, and we often commit personal or actual sin.

Actual sin is sin which people commit. There are two kinds of actual
sin: mortal and venial.

1. Mortal sin is a deadly offense against God, so horrible that it

destroys the life of grace in the soul. Three simultaneous
conditions must be fulfilled for a mortal sin: 1) the act must

37
be something very serious; 2) the person must have
sufficient understanding of what is being done; 3) the person
must have sufficient freedom of the will.

2. Venial sins are slight sins. They do not break our friendship
with God, although they injure it. They involve disobedience of
the law of God in slight (venial) matters.

Remember, if you need help — especially if you have been away for
some time — simply ask the priest and he will help you by "walking"
you through the steps to make a good confession.

BEFORE CONFESSION

Be truly sorry for your sins. The essential act of Penance, on the part
of the penitent, is contrition, a clear and decisive rejection of the sin
committed, together with a resolution not to commit it again, out of
the love one has for God and which is reborn with repentance.

The resolution to avoid committing these sins in the future is a sure

sign that your sorrow is genuine and authentic. This does not mean
that a promise never to fall again into sin is necessary.

A resolution to try to avoid the near occasions of sin suffices for true
repentance. God's grace in cooperation with the intention to rectify
your life will give you the strength to resist and overcome temptation
in the future.

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

Before going to Confession, you should make a review of mortal and

venial sins since your last sacramental confession, and should
express sorrow for sins, hatred for sins and a firm resolution not to
sin again.

38
Read 1 John 1: 5-10, 2: 1 - 2. We need help from the Holy Spirit to
have a sense of sin and to admit our sinfulness.

G od, our loving Father, I thank you for your love for me.
You gave me the gift of life, then people who are good to me,
and many other things to make me well and happy.
But I did not love in return. was not grateful.
I did some things that are selfish. I was unkind to others.
I committed sins. Please send the Holy Spirit
to help me remember my sins. Amen

Here are questions to help you remember sins committed since

your last confession; all the things you committed or omitted — sins
you want to ask forgiveness from God:

† Do I acknowledge how much God loves me and the gifts from His
goodness? Do I say "Thank you" to Him? Do I at least begin and end
my day with a prayer? Does my example becomes an inspiration to
others especially my family?

† Jesus wants me to join the Christian Community to celebrate

Sunday Mass where we offer Him in the sign of Bread and Wine —
our GIFT to the Father to thank Him. In turn, the Father gives Jesus
to us during Holy Communion. The Mass — an exchange of Gifts. Do
I try my best to be present during Mass?

† At home: Do I show respect to my parents and elders? Am I

reasonable in expecting respect from others? What is my attitude
towards laws and regulations for the common good?

† Am I kind to others: brothers? sisters? helpers? Do I contribute to

cleanliness and order where I live and work? Am I generous in
coming to the aid of people in need?

39
† For husband. and wives: fidelity to marriage vows? Sensitivity to the
feelings of others — especially, of the spouse, children, parents, in-
laws. Giving quality time to people entrusted for me to love and to
serve? Patience and perseverance in hard work? In giving
understanding to the weakness of others?

† Am I fair and just to the people I work with? How do I manage my

temper? Temptation to insult and say unkind words? lazy? careless?
cheating? Showing unjust favoritism and discrimination?

† Do I promote friendship and peace, or do I sow intrigues? indulge in

petty gossips? Making fun of others? Have I hurt the feelings of
others? Do I start quarrels and fights? a bully? Do I take care of my
health: in what I eat and drink? over-eating? taking harmful drugs?
intoxicating drinks? neglecting adequate rest and relaxation? How
are my work habits?

† Do I help keep our environment and surroundings clean and healthy?

Do I neglect my responsibility to conserve energy and use
environment resources conscientiously?

† Do I respect the property of others? Do I take what belong to others

without their permission? Am I careless with money: buying useless
things? Paying taxes and my debts as I should? Am I ready and
generous to give alms to people in need?

† How do I use my body, my eyes, my other senses — as gifts of God

for my well-being and human and spiritual growth and for the
service of others? Human Sexuality and genital Sex are related to
energy, power, responsible use with pleasure for one's personal
development and that of the spouse, the family, the whole human
race. Self-gratification in sex, impure actions by myself, or with
others, without regard for health and human life and human dignity,
leading others to these acts? These are the sins in this area of life.

† Do I hate anybody? Are there people I do not want to speak to? Am I

willing to forgive anybody who did something bad to me?

Listen to the words of absolution, the sacramental forgiveness of the

Church through the ordained priest. As you listen to the words of
forgiveness you may make the sign of the cross with the priest.

42
AFTER CONFESSION

Listen to the Priest and receive the forgiveness of your sins with the
Sign of the Cross. Give thanks to God for forgiving you again. Some
priests assign some vocal prayers for penance. Others may ask the
penitent to do something like this:

Go to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament on the altar (or in any silent

place suited for prayer) and reverently converse with Him:

▪ Say THANK YOU to Him for,

a. forgiving your sins,
b. healing your wounded feelings & hurts,
c. giving you renewed strength.

▪ Slowly pray again an Act of Contrition — but this time

using or in your own words.
▪ Tell Jesus how you feel: happy? relieved? at peace?
Ask Him also how He feels about you. In silence, listen to
what He will whisper into your heart.
▪ Then pray to Jesus for others. Ask Him to give some
specific blessings to those people you have offended.
▪ Ask Jesus to help you think and plan some good things to
do at home, in your community, school, and work.

Resolve to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation often. We

Catholics are fortunate to have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is
the ordinary way for us to have our sins forgiven. This sacrament is a
powerful help to get rid of our weaknesses, grow in holiness, and lead
a balanced and virtuous life.

GUIDE FOR ACTIVE IN T HE
MOST HOLY
PARTICIPATION EU C HA RI ST

FULL PARTICIPATION

The Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that
full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which
is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy, and to which the
Christian people, “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a
redeemed people" (1 Peter 2:9) have a right and obligation by reason
of their baptism.

FROM SPECTATOR TO PARTICIPANT

The following suggestions for fuller participation in the liturgy will

focus on the three major actions of our celebration and thanksgiving:

▪ We come together
▪ To hear the Word of God,
▪ To share our Eucharistic bread and wine in
obedience to the Lord's command:
"Do this in memory of me."

WE COME TOGETHER

1. Being there. The first action required of us is being present.

Your presence makes a difference. Your presence says that
you believe enough to be here with us, to proclaim the death
and resurrection of the Lord.

2. Being prompt. Being present on time and ahead of time says

that we put prime importance to the mass.

44
3. Being friendly. When we assemble, we make visible the Body
of Christ, and we must make visible that Christ who
welcomed all who came to him—even sinners.

4. Being well located. Where do we sit? Do we find a place

which facilitates our singing and our interaction with the
other members of the community? Do we make it easy for
those who come late to find a place?

5. Being a singing believer. Singing gives witness to our faith.

It is perhaps more important how we look when singing in
church than how we sound. By our body language and by our
voice we give witness to what we believe. (Sacrosanctum
Concilium No. 14)

WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD

Hearing the Word of God is an essential part of "doing" Eucharist. Our

stance before the Word is not passive but an active, attentive
listening. When God speaks, we have an obligation to receive his
message through the scriptural readings and Gospel.

1. Preparing to hear. If possible, read the texts in advance and

contemplate its message.

2. Receiving the Word respectfully, silently. During the reading

we need an atmosphere of quiet, free from distracting
movement. Silence doesn't just happen in church—it must be
created.

3. Being and looking attentive. There is a relationship between

the effectiveness of the speaker and the attention of the
listeners.

45
WE SHARE OUR BREAD AND WINE

1. Identifying ourselves with the bread and wine. When we

see these gifts being brought from the assembly, we see our
food and drink—our very lives—being placed on the altar and
offered to God.

2. Participation in the Eucharistic Prayer. How to be active

while the priest leading the celebration recites the Eucharistic
Prayer is an especially important question.

3. Seeking the larger unity. This is our petition at every

Eucharist: "Gather all who share this one bread and one cup
into the one Body of Christ, a living sacrifice of praise."

4. Giving ourselves through the responses and songs. The

enthusiasm with which we join in the responses and
acclamations is an essential part of our active participation.

5. Sharing the Eucharistic bread and cup. Our active

participation culminates in our reception of Holy Communion.
We get up, go to the altar, and share the bread and the cup.
We pray in silence and full contemplation of the Body of
Christ we have just received.

OUT INTO THE WORLD

The ultimate active participation is the renewed resolve at each

Eucharist to go out into the world challenged by the Word that we
have heard, and to share our lives as we have shared bread and wine.
The broken bread is the sign of how our lives are going to have to be
poured out and "wasted" for the good of all men and women.

The Liturgy of the Word

These reading sets are particularly intended for the Memorial of St. Justin,
Martyr, for June 1st, and the Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter for June
2nd, respectively:

First Reading FOR JUNE 1, 2022

Acts 20:28-38
I commend you to God who has the power
to build you up and to give you an inheritance.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

At Miletus, Paul spoke to the presbyters of the

Church of Ephesus: “Keep watch over yourselves
and over the whole flock
of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers,
in which you tend the Church of God that
he acquired with his own Blood.
I know that after my departure savage wolves
will come among you,
and they will not spare the flock.
And from your own group,
men will come forward perverting the truth
to draw the disciples away after them.
So be vigilant and remember
that for three years, night and day,
I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears.
And now I commend you to God
and to that gracious word of his that can build you up
and give you the inheritance
among all who are consecrated.
I have never wanted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.

You know well that these very hands

have served my needs and my companions.
50
In every way I have shown you
that by hard work of that sort
we must help the weak,
and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus
who himself said,
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

When he had finished speaking

he knelt down and prayed with them all.
They were all weeping loudly
as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him,
for they were deeply distressed that he had said
that they would never see his face again.
Then they escorted him to the ship.

To indicate the end of the readings, the reader acclaims:

LECTOR: The Word of the Lord.

PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

First Reading FOR JUNE 2, 2022

Acts 22:30; 23:6-11
You must bear witness in Rome.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

Wishing to determine the truth

about why Paul was being accused by the Jews,
the commander freed him
and ordered the chief priests
and the whole Sanhedrin to convene.
Then he brought Paul down
and made him stand before them.

Paul was aware that some

were Sadducees and some Pharisees,
so he called out before the Sanhedrin,
51
“My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees;
I am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the dead.”

When he said this, a dispute broke out

between the Pharisees and Sadducees,
and the group became divided.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection
or angels or spirits,
while the Pharisees acknowledge all three.

A great uproar occurred,

and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party
stood up and sharply argued,
“We find nothing wrong with this man.
Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

The dispute was so serious that the commander,

afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them,
ordered his troops to go down
and rescue Paul from their midst
and take him into the compound.

The following night the Lord stood by him

and said, “Take courage.
For just as you have borne witness
to my cause in Jerusalem,
so you must also bear witness in Rome.”

To indicate the end of the readings, the reader acclaims:

LECTOR: The Word of the Lord.

PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

52
After the First Reading the psalmist or cantor sings or says the Psalm,
with the people making the response.

Responsorial Psalm FOR JUNE 1, 2022

Ps 68:29-30, 33-35a, 35bc-36ab

℟. (33a) Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

Show forth, O God, your power,

the power, O God, with which you took our part;
For your temple in Jerusalem
let the kings bring you gifts.

℟. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

You kingdoms of the earth, sing to God,

chant praise to the Lord
who rides on the heights of the ancient heavens.
Behold, his voice resounds, the voice of power:
“Confess the power of God!”

℟. Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.

Responsorial Psalm FOR JUNE 2, 2022
Ps 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11

℟. (1) Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;

I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.”
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.

℟. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

I bless the LORD who counsels me;

even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

℟. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,

my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul
to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one
to undergo corruption.

℟. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

You will show me the path to life,

fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.

℟. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

55
After which the Deacon, or the Priest, says:

PRIEST: The Lord be with you.

PEOPLE: And with your spirit.

The Gospel FOR JUNE 1, 2022

Jn 17:11b-19
May they be one just as we are one.

PRIEST: ✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to

John

PEOPLE: Glory to you, O Lord.

Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying:

“Holy Father, keep them in your name
that you have given me,
so that they may be one just as we are one.

When I was with them I protected them in your name

that you gave me, and I guarded them,
and none of them was lost
except the son of destruction,
in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

But now I am coming to you.

I speak this in the world
so that they may share my joy completely.
I gave them your word, and the world hated them,
because they do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.

I do not ask that you take them out of the world

but that you keep them from the Evil One.

56
They do not belong to the world
any more than I belong to the world.
Consecrate them in the truth.
Your word is truth.

As you sent me into the world,

so I sent them into the world.
And I consecrate myself for them,
so that they also may be consecrated in truth.”

The Gospel FOR JUNE 2, 2022

Jn 17:20-26
May they all be one.

PRIEST: ✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to

John

PEOPLE: Glory to you, O Lord.

Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:

“I pray not only for these,
but also for those who will believe in me
through their word, so that they may all be one,
as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
that they also may be in us,
that the world may believe that you sent me.

And I have given them the glory you gave me,

so that they may be one, as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may be brought to perfection as one,
that the world may know that you sent me,
and that you loved them even as you loved me.

Father, they are your gift to me.

I wish that where I am they also may be with me,

57
that they may see my glory that you gave me,
because you loved me
before the foundation of the world.

Righteous Father, the world also does not know you,

but I know you, and they know that you sent me.
I made known to them your name and I will make it known,
that the love with which you loved me
may be in them and I in them.”

At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:

PRIEST: The Gospel of the Lord.

PEOPLE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Homily

The Homily then follows.

Prayer of the Faithful

At the end of the Homily, the General Intercession or Prayers of the Faithful
follows; here petitions for the Church, government, community, special
intentions and for the dead are being said.

PRIEST: Let us pray. . .

PEOPLE: Amen.

When the Liturgy of the Word has been completed, the people sit.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

During the Offertory Song the faithful usually express their participation by
making an offering, bringing forward bread and wine for the celebration of the
Eucharist and perhaps other gifts to relieve the needs of the Church and of
the poor.

58
PRIEST: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
for through your goodness, we have received
the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth
and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.

PEOPLE: Blessed be God for ever.

PRIEST: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness,
we have received the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.

PEOPLE: Blessed be God for ever.

An Awareness Exercise…
FOR THE END OF THE RETREAT

Spend some time with God reflecting upon the experience of the
past several days. Use one of the following approaches if it helps.

† Perhaps completing these thoughts may help you reflect

upon this experience:

My most difficult time during these days ________.

My most consoling time during these days _______.
For me, Praying with Scriptures has meant ______.
I found that by articulating my interior experience to
someone else, I can _____.

† What key grace or enlightenment have I received during these

days?

Perhaps the following phrases will help:

deepening of trust in God; awareness of my strength or my

helplessness; deeper sorrow and acceptance of my sinfulness;
enlightenment; experience of my own weakness; deeper
appreciation of Jesus's humanity; experience of praying the
Scriptures; experience of the Risen Lord; sense of freedom;
union with God; direction; learning to talk about my
experience.

† In what ways did I experience change within me?

For example, my role and God's role in prayer; letting go;

intimacy with God; quieting down; my responses to God
during prayer; blocking God's action in me; praying for a
grace.

70
† Did I experience interior movements during these days?
Some examples may help:

▪ From fear or anxiety to, I will give it a try,

to desire to let go in prayer, to trusting.
▪ Fear of my sinfulness/weakness through
discouragement to acceptance of my
sinfulness/weakness.
▪ Moments of peace, joy, or struggle;
a movement from a sense of helplessness
to hope & meaningfulness
▪ From doubt or confusion to wisdom and
enlightenment.

Prayerful noticing…
AS I REVIEW MY RETREAT

REVIEW OF PRAYER | The following are guide questions to

appropriate all your retreat experiences. You may ponder on all these
prompts; although it is suggested to only focus on what best works for you.

1. What scripture passage did I choose to reflect upon?

2. What grace did I ask for during my prayer moments?
3. What were my reactions, thoughts, changes in my mood?
4. What struck me or stood out for me during the sessions?
5. How did I feel about what struck me?
6. What is my most essential ‘take-away’ from this retreat?
7. What do I consider my most valuable experience in this
retreat? Sessions? Reflection & journaling? Sharing
moments? Rest periods?
8. Where was God working in my life during these past days?
9. Is there some point to which I should return in my next
moments of prayer?
10. How do I resolve to improve on my praying habits?
