SYNOPSIS OF THE PROJECT

Title of the Project

“OPERATION, REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF HELICOPTER

TRAVERSING SYSTEM (HTS) ONBOARD NAVAL WARSHIP”

Objective of the study

Helicopter traversing system also known by Helo Traversing System or HTS

is used onboard warships for pulling the Helicopter namely seaking (a type of
Helicopter in navy having gross weight approx 10T) from flight deck to hangar
(where helicopters are stowed for repair/ maintenance or providing shed) and vice
versa. The Objective of the study is the operation, maintenance, defect rectification
and trouble free exploitation of Helicopter Traversing System onboard Naval
Warship. It is also to ensure maximum availability of Helicopter Traversing System
without any breakdown, quick remedial action in case of defect occurs and to
maintain the system in a desired operational condition so that the purpose of HTS is
fulfilled at all the time when ship is at sea. The photograph shown below is of HTS
which is being connected with helicopter (Seaking). The procedure is known as
Ranging and is used for the purpose of pulling it inside Helo Hangar.

Rationale of the Study

Lack of maintenance/ improper maintenance may lead to defect arousal and it

may lead to malfunctioning of the system while operation. The study of operation,
maintenance and defect rectification of Helicopter Traversing System gives some
intangible benefits as appended below:-

(i) Better understanding of the architecture of Helo Traversing System and

enable maintenance engineers/ technician to have a clear picture of the
system.

(ii) To identify the scope of future study to undertake any modification or

up-gradation of the technology to provide better HTS for the flight deck
onboard ships.

(iii) Improves self-reliance, ability of personnel to repair of HTS when the

ship is at sea which will translate towards high morale and spirit of personnel
serving onboard ship.

(iv) To keep a log of all the defect encountered during the operation of the
HTS in order to keep a watch on the performance.

Detailed Methodology to be used for carrying out the study

The project work carried out at my ship/ workplace. The operation,

maintenance and defect rectification of Helo Traversing System can be
undertaken by various methodologies as appended below:
Page |3

(i) Collection of data from System manual held onboard ship.

(ii) Studying the books of reference and OEM manuals for the system.

(iii) Referring the technical drawing, specification, manuals and operating

instructions.

(iv) Understanding the various defects which occur while operating the
Helicopter Traversing system onboard i.e. leakage of hydraulic fluid from the
system, defect in three way valve in Main carriage, defects in wire rope, mis-
alignment of system track, air leakage from system pipelines, defect in auto
tensioner device etc.

(v) Understanding the basic architecture of the ships Helicopter Traversing

system.

(vi) Preparing notes on the Helo Traversing System.

(vii) Tabulation of all the activities.

The expected contribution from the study

(i) The study of operation, maintenance and defect rectification of

Helicopter Traversing system for minimizing the defects which occur during
operation.

(ii) An easy reference for future defect rectification, maintenance and

operation.

(iii) The study of project enhances the knowledge of different parts and
defects observed in the HTS onboard marine vessels.

(iv) It will increase the reliability and efficiency of HTS by proper operation
and maintenance.

(v) The study is to accelerate the working efficiency, if one has knowledge
of operation of the system.

Places/labs/equipment and tools required and planning of arrangements

 Visiting the Ship for collection of Drawings, Manuals regarding Helicopter

Traversing system.

 Visiting the repair yards and workshop to study how the repairs are being
carried out.

 Study of books and manuals.

 List of equipment and tools required for repair and maintenance.

Problems envisaged in carrying out the Project

The Helicopter Traversing System onboard my ship was installed in 2005 and

approx 17 years of life has been completed. The equipment being delicate in

nature (Since it has operation combination of Hydraulic, Pneumatic and

Machineries) leads to frequent occurrence of defects during operation. The

OEM M/s SAMAHE being French firm could not be contacted for provision of

latest available trouble shooting data of the system. Further, usage of

technical details and photographs of system has been restricted view it

belongs to warship and sharing such confidential data of warship is restricted.

Therefore commercially available data has also been utilized and managed to

make a reasonable document for the system. In addition to this, collection of

data and technical documents for the project was also a tedious process,

keeping in mind the time constraint due to service requirement and other

responsibilities.
