Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person
A. TOPIC: DOING PHILOSOPHY
B. KEY CONCEPTS:
 Philosophy has essential place in our daily lives. Where, engaging in doing
philosophy as philosophical reflection invites us to concretize and make clear our
assumptions and beliefs. It involves self-reflection in which we should step backward
to be able to assess our assumptions and beliefs to have internal coherence and
consistency. Philosophical reflection involves rational activities such as thinking about
thinking and evaluation.
 Most of people believe that viewing life is separated or unrelated events from viewing
our experiences. However, people should realize that viewing experiences should be
learning opportunities.
 Thinking about thinking is an ability of a person to think about and regulates one’s own
thought. According to John Flavell, “it is your ability to control your thinking processes
through various strategies, such as organizing, monitoring, and adapting. And it is your
ability to reflect upon the tasks or processes 6 you undertake and to select and utilize
the appropriate strategies necessary in your intercultural interactions”.
 We don’t just accept or rejects assumptions, beliefs or situation that presented to us.
But we should critically and analytically examine anything that presented to us.
 Philosophical reflections involve ability of evaluating of assumptions or beliefs or
situation. Where, it develops our ability on problem solving and decision making.
Generally, evaluation refers to person’s ability to appraise something to determine the
worth or fitness of something. For example, before taking medicine, you get medical
evaluation from a doctor. Evaluation under doing philosophy should have systematic
process of collection of data on certain thing before making judgement. And basically,
evaluating something answers the Higher Order Thinking Skills such as “how and
why”.
 Philosophizing helps develop a person’s ability to make sound
choices and judgement that can apply in daily life. Produces clear and concise
thought from a person and self-development.
 SELF-REFLECTION-The activity of thinking about own feelings and behavior, and the
reasons
 Reflection is vital in ensuring that our actions and decisions are well thought
out and are done with due regard for their implications and consequences on
ourselves, others, and our surroundings. It helps us understand ourselves and
our actions better.
 Why reflection is important to us.
 “Reflection requires a person to be willing to examine one’s thoughts, feelings,
and actions and to learn more about one’s life and experiences. For example,
you wake up in the morning you reflect about the thing you plan to do for the
whole day. This enables you to set your daily goals and set you on the path of
thinking of ways to achieve them.” Let’s us now engage reflection as
