Works without faith

I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. Amos 5:21-24 We know for sure that faith cannot exist only in the abstract: it must be demonstrated in our works. James tells us that faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works (James 2:17-18). He goes on to note that even the demons have faith in God indeed, they tremble at the knowledge of Him. But of course they do no works of righteousness, and are therefore unjustified in His sight. By contrast, James continues, the faith of Abraham wrought with his works, and by works was made perfect (v. 22). Legitimate faith, in other words, is inevitably shown in works of righteousness. So while we know that faith without works is dead, it is also clear that works without faith are equally dead. It is undeniably true that the religious world offers much in the way of good works, and these undeniably benefit those in need. But with respect to Gods accounting, they mean nothing when faith is absent. Faith, it must be understood, includes obeying all the dictates of the new covenant. Paul said that even if he bestowed all his goods to feed the poor and gave his body to be burned, but lacked love, it profited him nothing (I Cor. 13:3). The same is true of faith. Jesus warned, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matt. 7:21-23). Works without faith may profit many a body, but they will not profit the soul. Each is dead without the other.
