2.) To identify any relationship between the energy released by one alcohol and another alcohol.
3.) To establish a relationship between the number of carbon atoms and the enthalpy of combustion in different
alcohols.
Make a graph and plot the ΔH combustion data; # of carbons of alcohol as x-‐coordinate and ΔH combustion as y--
‐coordinate.
Methanol:
q combustion = mCΔT
= -(120g) (4.184 J/g°C) (8.5°C)
= -4267.68 J
= -4.27 kJ
qcombustion
ΔH combustion = m methanol burned
¿

Ethanol:

3.) Compare the heat of combustion of the alcohols. Rank the heat of combustion of the different alcohol in
increasing order.
In this experiment we are tasked to compute the heat combustion of 5 different alcohols. These are the
alcohols and its heat combustion: Pentanol has -1236 kJ/mol,Butanol has -907 kJ/mol,Propanol has 717
kJ/mol,Ethanol has -448 kJ/mol, Methanol has -210.2 kJ/mol. As you can see pentanol has the highest heat
combustion and methanol has the lowest heat of combustion.
4.) Examine the plot for the heat of combustion data. Is there a direct relationship between heat of
combustion and number of carbon atoms? Explain.
The enthalpy of combustion will grow as the number of carbon atoms increases. The discrepancy
between the amount of energy required to break bonds and the amount released when new bonds are
formed causes enthalpy variations.
Conclusion:
We conclude that pentanol is the greatest because it has better fuel qualities than methanol, ethanol, and even butanol,
such as higher energy density, better blending stability, and less hygroscopic nature.
