Transportation Simplex Method: Example

There are three warehouses to supply goods to four

retailers, warehouse No. 1 has 250 items of this kind of
goods, warehouse No. 2 has 450 items and warehouse No.
3 has 500 items. retailer No.1 needs 200 items of this kind
of goods, retailerNo.2 needs 400 items, retailer No.3
needs 300 items and retailer No.4 needs 300 items.
Transport one item from warehouse No.1 to retailer No.1
cost $4.Transport one item from warehouse No.1 to
retailers No.2 cost $2, so long and so for. Assume that
the total supply equals the total demand.

Cost

Transportation Cost = (2 × 250)+ (3 × 200) + (7 × 150) + (5 × 100)+

( 3 × 200) +(1 × 300) = 500 + 600 + 1050 + 500 + 600 + 300 = $ 3550

Project introduction

In our project the site is about 375,000 m2 (375mX1000m)

with a rectangle shape. The contractor divided the total
area into 24 (125mX125m) sub areas for materials
handling. The total earthwork for rough grading has been
designed as: bank cut volume 149,775 cu.m and bank fill
volume is also 149,775cum. So, the cut and fill are
balanced. The following figure shows the cut and fills area
in the site: Black indicates that area is a cut area (denote
by C1,C2…) and red indicates a fill area (denote by F1,
F2….).

Cycle Time

CT = LT + HT + DT + RT + ST

CT = Cycle Time

LT = Loading Time

HT = Hauling Time

DT = Dumping Time

RT = Returning Time

ST = Spotting Time

The returning haul unit may need to join a waiting line before it can be
loaded again, and it may have to wait for assistance to be spotted in a
position where it can be loaded. If this time is considered at all, it is
generally assumed to be a fixed time known as spotting time (ST).
