Question 1 (5 pts)

In the Fig. 1, a constant horizontal force

of magnitude 12 N is applied to a uniform solid cylinder
by fishing line wrapped around the cylinder. The mass of
the cylinder is 10 kg, its radius is 0.10 m, and the cylinder
rolls smoothly on the horizontal surface.
Fig. 1

1. What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the center of mass of the cylinder?
2. What is the magnitude of the angular acceleration of the cylinder about the center of mass?
3. In unit-vector notation, what is the frictional force acting on the cylinder?

Question 2 (4 pts)

A cart with mass 340 g moving on a frictionless linear air track at an initial speed of 1.2 m/s
undergoes an elastic collision with an initially stationary cart of unknown mass. After the collision,
the first cart continues in its original direction at 0.66 m/s.

1. What is the mass of the second cart?

2. What is its speed after impact?

3. What is the speed of the two-cart center of mass?

Question 3 (4 pts)
Consider the diagram in Fig. 2. The mass of block A is 80 kg and the mass of block B is 15 kg.
The coefficient of static friction between the two blocks is μ = 0.50. The horizontal surface is
frictionless. What minimum force F must be exerted on block A in order to prevent block B from
falling?

Question 4 (5 pts)

Fig. 3 shows a uniform disk, with mass M = 2.5 kg

and radius R = 20 cm, mounted on a fixed horizontal axle.
A block with mass m = 1.2 kg hangs from a massless cord
that is wrapped around the rim of the disk. Find the acceleration
of the falling block, the angular acceleration of the disk, and the
tension in the cord. The cord does not slip, and there is no
friction at the axle.

Question 5 (2 pts)

A satellite, moving in an elliptical orbit (see Fig. 4), is 360 km above Earth's surface at its
farthest point and 180 km above at its closest point. Knowing that the radius of Earth is
RE = 6.37 × 106 m, calculate:

1. the semimajor axis

2. the eccentricity of the orbit.

Fig. 4 : A satellite of mass m moving in an elliptical orbit around the Earth, where e is the eccentricity
of the ellipse and a is the semimajor axis of the ellipse. Rp is the nearest distance and Ra is the farthest
distance from the Earth.
