The

Good Part
By: Alivia Watson
What is it?
“The Good Part”
Is a song by the band AJR which was
released in June 2017.

A section from the middle of the song

has become very popular on many
social media platforms, especially
TikTok, over the past few years.
It is a 10 second clip, saying,
“Can we skip to the good part?”
with a few seconds of music afterward.

I gathered 7 videos with this sound.

Each one has a different title -- a word
that, I think, signifies what some of our
“good parts” in life are.
01 Perseverance
Hampstead A. [@alex.hampstead]. (2021, September 5). Things are starting to go
back to normal. [Video].
TikTok. https://www.tiktok.com/@alex.hampstead/video/7004449272070556934

Good Thing #1:
This video shows the student section at a football game during and after the pandemic from the
perspective of someone who films during games.
Things changed so much during that time. Like this creator, many people's’ jobs were changed
as well and it took a while before it went back to what we knew to be normal.
This video easily gained “authority” or virality, not only because of the great filming, but also
because so many people could relate to the message being shared.
To me, this video signifies perseverance. A way to show that the good things in our lives don’t
happen all at once. When things get hard, we can always look forward to better days.

Progress
Edgar’s Mission. [@edgarsmission]. (2021, October 15). Anastasia arrived into our care on January 1,
heartbreakingly emaciated, covered in flystrike and unable to stand. #friendsnotfood
#farmsanctuary [Video].
TikTok. https://www.tiktok.com/@edgarsmission/video/7019450231897033986

This video comes from Edgar’s Mission,

Good Thing #2:
a shelter in Australia who rescues injured farm animals.
The animal in this video is a sheep, named Anastasia, who was unable to walk due to an accident
involving its back legs.
Throughout the video, they show the healing journey of this animal and its progress toward
walking again. The end says it all -- Anastasia walks up to the camera and stomps, as if to say, “I
did it.”
Many people disagree with trying to save these farm animals, but others are inspired and love
the message this video brings. Either way, their views increase the virality of this video and the
creator.
There are many videos using the same sound that are similar to this one. Whether an animal,
human, or alien, progress is inspiring and is a wonderful thing.
03 Success
Spraggan L. [@lspraggan]. (2021, October 16). can we skip to the good part? ❤ #fyp
[Video].
TikTok. https://www.tiktok.com/@lspraggan/video/7019747154575068422

Good Thing #3:
I love videos like this. Before we skip to the good part, this woman, Lucy Spraggan, shows her
audition on X-Factor and the way the judges reacted just after seeing her, then a few years later,
we see her thriving on stage at her own concert.
Videos like these show a different side of celebrities that we don’t see often. Sometimes it’s hard
to remember that they started out at the bottom, just like the rest of us. I think that’s why this
video became viral, apart from the creator already being popular. We like watching people
succeed, especially when we can see their journey through it all.
Success is another “good thing” that we all seek, but sometimes it feels out of reach. We all wish
that we could just skip the work and enjoy the benefits, but isn’t the work part of the good?
04 Determination
Zamolo R. [@rebeccazamolo. (2021, November 5). Gender reveal tomorrow! Thanks to
all of you that have been so supportive of my #ivfjourney❤#23weekspregnant
#skiptothegoodpart [Video].
TikTok. https://www.tiktok.com/@rebeccazamolo/video/7027137970142547205

Good Thing #4:

This situation is very common in videos using this sound. So many people all over the world
struggle with infertility or the loss of a child, and this YouTuber was no different. A few years ago,
she lost her unborn child. Although devastating, she and her husband didn’t give up and
continued going through IVF, then a year later, they got pregnant again.
Many people use this sound to take viewers through their infertility journey. I think that videos
like these don’t get popular just because they can be relatable, but because they bring out all
kinds of emotions, like sadness and longing, but also hope and growth. Creators who share hard
stories like this often gain immense support which helps them continue strong in their journey.
It’s really not hard to see that being determined is a good thing that leads to great outcomes.
05 Fighter

Stories like this get me every time.
Good Thing #5:

This video is of a little girl who was told at birth that she would
never walk. Once we skip to the good part, she is taking big steps with an even bigger smile on
her face.
I don’t think the “good part” in this situation is just the end, it’s the fight! This video is one of
many where people show their journey through a difficult situation, and every single one went
viral. People are inspired by stories like these, stories where someone never stopped fighting and
ended up better because of it.
We often don’t think about the good times in our lives being the fight or journey to success. I
think that this is the part that people relate with the most, since everyone is going through
something different. It’s normal for the fight to hurt or to have the feeling of wanting to give up.
But we can see how it changes us and the influence we can make as we share our stories. Now,
that’s a good thing.
06 Achievement

zle/video/7155119619903180078

 Good Thing #6:

In this viral video, Tennessee cheerleaders react to their football team breaking a 15-game losing
streak against Alabama. The last time they beat Alabama was in 2006, so this was a big win for
them. Fans from both teams commented, congratulating the Vols on a long-awaited victory.
This video got over 1.1M likes, possibly because of the popularity of the cheerleader who posted it,
but also because of the influence and success of college athletics that bring a mass of followers.
I can’t help but smile when I watch videos like this because it’s easy to see that these wins mean
a lot to so many people and they don’t try to hide it. They show that even after long periods of
disappointment, hard work and determination lead to some of the greatest achievements.
Seeing the outcome is one of the good things in our lives, something that everyone can enjoy.
07 Survivor
Galindo K. [@krystalmgalindo]. (2021, October 19). 16 rounds of chemo and a double
mastectomy later… #cancerat35 #breastcancer #momof4 #cancerawareness
#cancersurvivor [Video].
TikTok. https://www.tiktok.com/@krystalmgalindo/video/7021023238079745285

Good Thing #7:
This amazing video shows the journey of a woman with breast cancer and the moment she finds
out she beat it. She went through 16 rounds of chemo and a double mastectomy and never lost
hope. Today, she lives the result.
Again, the emotional ones always seem to make the top of the list. This woman shared her story
and many others commented with similar experiences. She did not do it for fame or recognition,
she posted this video full of pride and accomplishment, spreading a message of perseverance
and hope to all.
Fighting through something like this and surviving is a GOOD thing. Then again, she would not
be posting this video if she skipped right to the end. Her journey was her good thing as well.
“You can’t appreciate the good times
without the bad ones.”
-Beyoncé Knowles
The Pressure to “Skip” the In-Between
Don’t get me wrong, I love this song and I’ve enjoyed researching it and finding
awesome videos that use it, but I feel like society has created this “pressure” to
fast-forward through the present so we can see the end result. But that’s the thing: the
present is when we learn certain lessons and find the people and places that we need to
build our future “good part.”
So, why is today not the good part?
Yes, there will always be “better days ahead,” but those days could be today or
tomorrow. Ahead could mean anything. I think, the best days of our lives are the
in-between days. The ones with work, ups and downs, starting over, and all kinds of
emotions. Skipping past those means you also skip past the good. Those small things
that may go unnoticed now but looking back you realize they were, in reality, the good
part.
I think we decide what that is. Each video I added in this project was deeper than just
the end. I think that each one had a story to tell before the “good part” came. Every
word I used relates to not only every single video, but I think every single person. The
things that we go through in our lives, the in-between, require determination,
perseverance, and a fight, all of which leads to progress and ultimately achievement and
success. For me, the journey is the good part. Without it, nothing else would be possible.
