In Britain, there are two occasions each year when people receive presents: on
Christmas Day and birthdays. Inthe past, your 21st birthday was the most
important because it symbolized becoming an adult. Peopletraditionally
received a silver key on that day to symbolize opening the door to the adult world.
Today, people inBritain legally become adults at the age of eighteen, so they often
have the biggest celebration on that birthday. The custom of giving on 25 December
only dates back to Victorian times. Before that it was more common inBritain to
exchange presents on New Year‘s Eve 31st December. These days on Christmas
Eve parents putpresents for young children in ‘stockings’ and leave them in their
bedrooms while they are asleep. When children wake up in the morning, many of
them believe that Santa Claus has visited them in the night andbrought them their
presents. Gifts for older children and grown – ups are put around the Christmas tree
onChristmas Eve. Then on Christmas morning, everyone sits around the tree and
opens their presents.Easter and Mother‘s Day are also important days. Young
children usually receive chocolate eggs at Easter, andpeople often give presents
(chocolates or flowers) to their mothers on Mother‘s Day. People also receive giftson
important occasions in their lives. For example, all the guests at a wedding
traditionally bring a gift for thebride and groom. And these days, students sometimes
get presents from their parents if they do well on theirexams

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Most of us have a sweet tooth. We love to eat a cookie, a donut or a piece of chocolate. But have you noticed
what often happens when you eat one? When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and
affects part of our brain. We may feel better, but the good feeling stops and we just want another one. All
tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. This is why many scientists believe that our love
of sugar might be an addiction. In the body, sugar acts like an addictive drug, one that doctors recommend we
all cut down.
It seems obvious now that too much sugar can harm us, but why is it harmful? In early human history, the
body began storing sugar as fat to use as energy. Our bodies are efficient, so they need very little sugar. Today,
the Western diet has the highest amount of sugar in history. There are also more high blood pressure and
diabetes in the world. Some researchers believe that too much sugar may be the culprit.
How do we battle our sweet tooth? Doctors advise us to cut down on sweets. They recommend that we
choose healthy foods for snacks. Nuts, dark chocolate and yogurts are some of them. Yet even healthy foods
can have too much sugar. Yogurts that are advertised as low-fat can have 17 grains, about half the daily
allowance. However, the less sugar you cat, the less you want. Exercise helps, too. Using facilities such as
walking tracks and gymnasiums can help control our desire.

Many students believe that math is an inherited ability-either they have the math gene, or they don't. but a recent
research shows that inborn talent might not be as important as we think. In the long run, the most successful students
are often those who work the hardest, not those with the highest IQ's. These students believe that perseverance, not
an innate gift, is the key to achievement.
In her book Mindset, The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck argues that a positive mindset is what makes
some students push themselves when others give up. Students with a "fixed” mindset believe that they were born with
a certain set of talents. They see challenges as a sign that they've reached the limit on their potential, and view
challenges as a chance to learn and improve. They know that their intelligence can be built through experience and
effort, and are not held back by the idea of inborn restrictions.
Geoff Colvin delivers a similar message in his book, Talent Is Overrated. He demonstrates that success is almost
always the result of what he calls "deliberate practice", a concentrated effort to improve one's skills through focused
effort. Inborn talent might make a difference when a subject is first tackled, but years later it's the hard workers who
are the most successful. Math teacher Kim Callan agrees: “It is rare for a hard-working student to fail my class."
Having the right mindset is critical to success. Children need to believe in their ability to overcome challenges
through concentrated effort. If you place your child in the right math class and encourage her to work hard, there's no
limit to what she will be able to accomplish.
