Translations & Reflections Drawing Review

Take a sheet of graph paper and set it down landscape (long-side set horizontally).
Draw x- and y-axes in approximately the center of the paper.

Plot the following points:

A (1, -2) F (15, -8) K (17, -2)

B (3, -5) G (11, -5) L (18, -3)

C (3, -8) H (13, -5) M (18, -4)

D (9, -2) I (12, -2) N (-11, 5)

E (15, -2) J (10, -8) O (-7, 5)

Connect and join the following line segments:

AB BC EF

GH EK IJ

KL LM NO

Follow the following steps:

1. Reflect segment AB across x=3 line; label it A’B’
2. Translate segment EF according to (x, y) → (x-9, y); label it E’F’
3. Connect points E’ and D
4. Reflect segment E’D across y=-5 line; label it E’’D’
5. Translate segment GH 5 units to the left; label it G’H’. What is the symbolic
notation?
6. Reflect segment GH across x=14 line; label it H’’G’’
7. Connect points G’’ and M
8. Translate segment AB according to (x, y) → (x+15, y-3); label it A’’B’’
9. Reflect segment IJ according to (x, y) → (24-x, y); label it I’J’

For each of the following, use the appropriate labels:

10. Translate figure EKLMG’’H’’F up by 10, and left by 12.
11. Translate figure EKLMG’’H’’F according to (x, y) → (x-16, y+10)
12. Translate figure AA’BC up by 10 and right by 6 units. What is the
symbolic notation?
13. Translate segment EF 22 units left and up by 10 units. What is the
symbolic notation?
14. Reflect segment E’’F’’ across x=-9 line
15. Translate figure JGIHJ’ 16 units to the left and 10 units up.

In the third quadrant, create the missing 3-letter word. However, you may only add
3 more new points (PQR). Create the rest of the points and lines using reflections
and translations. Jot down your steps on the back of your graph paper in the same
format as above.

Extension (optional). Step 9 gives the symbolic notation for a reflection across
x=12. Come up with a symbolic notation for the reflections on steps 1, 4, 6, 14.
