Section Conundrum: When learning to tell time in Spanish, students often have trouble with time on the
second half of the hour, and also with asking or answering about at what time an event takes place.
To practice the second half of the hour, a round, analog clock is better, as you can clearly see when
the minute hand passes the half hour. This is like when in English we say “It’s twenty to five” Son las
cinco menos veinte. Rather than saying it is 4:40. To practice telling time, whenever you see a clock, ask
yourself ¿Qué hora es?, then answer the question.

Lección 1- Third Assignment
For the second issue, remember you are asking about and talking about an event, the time is part of
the event’s decriptive information. Ex: ¿A qué hora es la clase? The class will be the subject of your
response, and the “A” of the question will appear in the answer for “at”.Ex: La clase es a las diez.
Practice this by asking yourself and then answering a number of “A qué hora es…….?, about the various
activities you participate in during the day.
In the following section, note the difference in the format of the questions. #1,3,4,6 ask about events.
#2,5 ask about the time on the clock. Recognizing the formats will help you be clear about which answer
is needed, the current time, or the time at which something will take place.

3 Preguntas Answer the questions using the times given in parentheses. Use complete sentences and
write the numbers as words.
