CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

1.1 COURSE DESCRIPTION: CVEG4513 CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Introduction to methods and procedures for management of civil engineering construction


projects including organization, plans and specs, cost estimating and bidding, project planning
and finance, quality control/ assurance, construction safety, cost management, labor issues,
change orders, and subcontractor issues.

Prerequisite: Senior standing.


Required course for BSCE.

1.2 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. A basic understanding of the civil construction industry.


Describe the key components of the civil construction industry.
2. An understanding of the common project delivery methods.
Identify the names of the common project delivery methods, their advantages and
disadvantages, and the roles of the parties.
3. An understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in a project.
Discuss the names, roles, and responsibilities of each of the parties commonly involved in
a project.
4. An understanding of the contract documents.
Describe the documents, list their order of precedence, and what type of information is
traditionally provided by each.
5. A basic understanding of the life cycle of a construction project from the point of view of
a contractor.
Discuss the common segments in the life cycle of a construction project and the types of
tasks the contractor performs during each segment.
6. An understanding of the concepts of cost estimating and bidding.
Perform quantity take-offs, estimate costs, and assemble a bid.

7. An understanding of the methods of project control.
Perform project scheduling, describe cost control strategies.
8. A basic understanding of the laws associated with the construction industry.
Explain key laws, discuss liability.
9. A knowledge of the concepts of ethics and professionalism as applied to the construction
industry.
Discuss ethics and professionalism as applied to the construction industry.
10. An understanding of other important topics in contracting.
Discuss quality, safety, and regulatory agencies.

1.5 GRADING

1.5.2 Notes

1. Assignments, Participation, Quizzes grading points achieved will be proportioned at final


grading to maximum total points possible of 175, or 35% of the grading basis.
2. Assignments are due on the date specified at the beginning of class.
3. Deduction will be made for unexcused absences
4. Regular attendance is required. Students are asked to indicate attendance by marking a
roll sheet at the beginning of each class. Excused absence will be considered for
situations of illness or conflicting approved university activities. Please confirm the
reason for absence to instructor by e-mail. Grade points are deducted for unexcused
absences and a letter grade reduction may be made for poor participation and attendance.
5. Weather Policy - If the University is closed due to weather conditions, class will be
cancelled during that closure. Every effort will be made to cover all of the missed
material prior to the end of the semester.
6. There are scheduled assignments for this class including occasional homework as well as
projects. The assignments are not optional and must be submitted at the time that they are
due. Hard copy of all required submittals is required. Late submittals will not be
accepted unless due to a hardship justifiable to the instructor.
