What’s More
Activity 1: Identifying Relationships

Directions: Fill in the table with the information needed. Answer how the given factor
affects the eruption of a volcano.

Factors affecting How it affects eruption

Volcanic
Eruption
1. Magma’s Higher temperature, less viscous, weak eruption
Temperature
2. Magma’s Higher silica content, highly viscous, strong eruption
Chemical
Composition
3. Amount of Higher amount of dissolve gas, highly viscous, strong eruption
dissolved gases

Guide Question:

1. What is the main factor that determines how volcano erupts?

 Main factors: magma chemistry and content, temperature, viscosity, volume and
how much water and gas is in it, the presence of groundwater, and the plumbing
of the volcano.

2. Explain the relationship of silica content of magma to its viscosity.

 Viscosity depends on primarily on the composition of the magma, and

temperature. Higher silica content magmas have higher viscosity than lower
silica content magmas.

Activity 2: Directions: List down 3 bad effects and 3 good effects of volcanic eruption.
