CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Agriculture in the Philippines nowadays met different evolving problems, one of which is the increasing numbers of snail pests in rice farms. Farmers have tried to eliminate these pests by using natural repellents and chemical pesticides but still these pests are continually multiplying, harming and eating their crops. Many have conducted studies to provide solutions in eliminating the invaders of the farms such as the use of organic pest control and electronic pest repellents. However, these solutions usually worked in small gardens and only few are directed on the reduction of the snail pests. Sound waves have found to have an effect not only to humans but also to animals and plants. There are studies involving sound waves in high frequencies that cause helpful and harmful effects to the growth of plants and could also give anxiety to animals that caused their sudden death. Ultrasonic devices are used these days as a pest control device to drive away insects and rodents in our homes. This brought up the idea to the proponents to apply the use of ultrasonic devices in eliminating the snail pests in rice farms, unfortunately the snail diagram shows that snails do not have ears and they dont detect sounds. The proponents managed to gather facts about the snails and found interesting facts that might lead to the satisfaction of their curiosity. Snails are discovered to dislike body contact in salt and copper. These two can be associated as ionic compounds. Ionic compound is formed by ionic bonding, which is a chemical bond between two oppositely charged ions. An ionic device simulates an atmosphere similar to the atmosphere before a lightning occur by using negative ions released in the air. This atmosphere is known to be one of the fears of insects and other animals.

The proponents find the mentioned facts to be somehow related and formed an idea of incorporating properties of salt and copper in creating an ionic device intended for eliminating snail pests in rice farms. To put it briefly, this study is primarily concerned on the reduction and the gradual extermination of snail pests in rice farms by applying the ideas stated by the proponents. Moreover, this study will also consider the effects of using the ionic device in snails and rice plants.

CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

TRACE (Technological Research for Advanced Computer Study) College, founded in 1986 by Chairman Efraim C. Genuino, was initially created as a computer school to address the countrys need for an industrialized country. The school started with only few computer units and now grew into an advanced school. With branches in Makati and Los Baos, Laguna, TRACE College now offers not only computer courses but other service providing courses as well. TRACE College education system is designed to harbor effective learning through its unique approach in education supported by its three pillars Reality Immersion Method, Smart campus, and International Systems and Standards. In order to make education relevant to the challenges of the times, TRACE College is adapting its curriculum continually. In spite of the good courses offered, great facilities and the quality of teaching at TRACE College, students in the College Department still experience inconveniences from their schedule of classes and school activities. Although bulletin boards serve as the means of students to track down announcements and school events, not all of them have the time to spare to read it. In addition, students also experience difficulty waiting for their classes due to sudden conflicts between the class schedule and assigned rooms. With this situation, not only the students get affected but also the instructors who get their planned activities delayed due to jumbled class schedules and late delivered memos. Moreover, students also suffer nuisance from getting informed late about their subjects being dissolved and abrupt changing of the subjects schedule which results to more conflicts encountered. The purpose of the study is to apply solutions to the encountered problems by the college students of TRACE College with the use of a digital schedule display for the subjects and a paging system for unexpected change in schedule and announcements. This also evaluates the perception of the students in the application and the effects after the application of the proposed project.
