Title: Copper-alloy-coated Self-disinfecting Phone Case

[bago, de pedro, celi]

Introduction

(Guide Questions you can use to write this: What is the current situation with phone cases?

Why is a self-disinfecting case important?) Note: at least 3 sentences per paragraph; at

least 5 paragraphs total for this section.

In a post-pandemic world, the people are now far more aware of the ways diseases can be

transmitted. According to Bettenhausen (2022), the pandemic has led to an unprecedented

demand for the cleaning product industry. The infectiousness of the COVID-19 virus has made

people far more conscious of their and their possessions’ cleanliness.

As technology and the internet permeate society more and more each day, people use

their phones now more than ever, be it for personal use or for work, mostly because of their

invaluable functionality for communication. Wheelwright (2022) stated that, on average,

Americans check their phones 344 times a day as of 2022; this is a 31% increase from the

statistic in 2021 stating that Americans check their phones 262 times per day. The Philippines

has been touted as the text capital of the world and, with the advent of social media, has now also

been dubbed as the “social media capital of the world” due to how a sizeable percentage of the

population–92 million social media users–spends an average of nearly 6 hours on mobile internet

every day with much of that time spent on social media platforms (Jatwala, 2022).
Mobile devices are 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat stated bya Abrams (2017), a

person's hand is the reason why phones get dirtier. Viruses and bacteria are everywhere and its

threat is that since a person can’t see it with the naked eye. These viruses and bacteria get passed

on and on until a disinfectant or certain chemical can eliminate it.

There are studies of using copper as an antimicrobial, it works when the release of

copper ions (electrically charged particles) when microbes, transferred by touching, sneezing or

vomiting, land on the copper surface. Copper is an inexpensive material depending on how much

copper will be used.

[last paragraph] To this end, the researchers turned their attention to phone cases to be

innovated. _ Companies like Alloi, Aeris, and Wieland Chase have already made copper-based

phone cases but this time,

A survey by Wheelwright (2022) surveyed Americans to investigate cell phone usage and

habits. They surveyed a sample of a thousand respondents at the ages of 18 and older, asking to

refer to their phone’s screen time report to figure out how frequently they checked their phones

and how much time they spent in total on their phones per day. They found that, on average,

Americans check their phones 344 times a day and spend 2 hours and 54 minutes on their phones

every day.

A report by Kemp (2022) summarized the data, insights, and trends on how people in the

Philippines use connected devices and services in the year 2022. They reviewed the entire

populations and compared the usages by volume using the population as a basis. Among the

numerous amounts of data, 92.05 million were active social media users; the average amount of

time of using the internet daily was 10 hours and 27 minutes with 55.4% of that time spent on

mobile phones; 96.1% of the internet-using population used smartphones; and 51.06% of web

traffic was from mobile phones.

Abrams (2017) stated in an article that “cell phones are 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat.”

People tend to carry their phones even where they usually wash their hands so the filth

accumulates, especially when their phones are not frequently cleaned. Though human bacteria
are usually harmless, studies have found that cell phones sometimes carry harmful bacteria such

as E. coli and Streptococcus.

Lapidos (2019) interviewed Jason Tetro, a microbiologist and author of The Germ Files,

and asked how dirty cell phone cases are. They were told that yes, phone cases do have germs

but that most of the bacteria are harmless flora. Most of the microbes on phone cases come from

the users themselves and the body is already accustomed to its own bacteria; though, of course. If

the person is not good at hygiene, it can be reasonably inferred that their phone and phone case

would be as dirty as them, with the frequency of how they are used.
