Course introduction
• Nearly thirty years ago, Frosch and Gallopoulos (1989) proposed the
industrial closed-loop concept
Concept of closed-loop OM (Cont.)
Definition: Design for environment (DfE)
• Design for environment (DfE) attempts to reduce the impact of product
design upon the environment of a product or service. It takes into account
the whole life cycle - going beyond just the use of recycled materials or
proper packaging or disposal.
• The DfE approach includes five aspects that follow the life-cycle of a
product, and enables companies to be more environmentally friendly in
their work.
• These five aspects are – (1) Materials, and extraction; (2) Production;
(3) Transport, distribution, and packaging; (4) Use; and (5) End of life,
Design For Disassembly and Design for Recycling.

Definition : Circular economy
• Circular economy seeks to move away from the linear model of
industrial activity – “take, make, dispose” – so as to offer approaches
that include interaction loops among actors.
• The MacArthur Foundation has also focused on the potential of applying these
principles to everyday consumer goods (food, beverages, textiles, and packaging),
demonstrating via case studies the potential savings and revenue generated by a
circular economy.
• These components interact with each other and transform their forms over
time and space in an ecosystem or across different ecosystems.
• A transformation takes place in a material exchange and energy cascading
process.
The key features of biological ecosystems
1st question: Can we define the ecosystem’s
boundary?
• An ecosystem’s boundary is not naturally fixed and it is only a choice for
study purposes, as we can study an fish pond or we can study the Earth as
a whole.
• Each of the sub-ecosystems to the ecosystem of the Earth cannot be a
100% closed-loop system in terms of its material exchanges as it interacts
and exchanges materials with other sub ecosystems and to the ecosystem
of the Earth to some degree.
• No ecosystems except for the ecosystem of the Earth can ever qualify
100% closed-loop material exchanges, the measure for an industrial
system to be qualified as an industrial ecosystem is its continuous
movement toward higher levels of closed-loop material exchanges.
Benefits of Industrial ecosystem concept
(cont.)
• The industrial revolution has increased the rate of production
dramatically, which exaggerates the defect of the linear
transformation process on which the traditional industrial systems are
based.
