7's Press Release
With only two weeks to go until RWC Sevens 2022 kicks off in Cape Town, on 9 September 2022, captain Shakes
believe the SA team are ready and hungry for a win…
The opportunity of seeing the best rugby teams on the planet vying for the title of world champions hasn't been
experienced in South Africa since 1995 which will make this a very special occasion.
It will also be the first ever Rugby World Cup Sevens in Africa.
The event will be the first return of sevens to Cape Town in close to three years. The 2020 and 2021 Cape Town Sevens
editions were both cancelled due to Covid-19.
The Blitzboks are top seeds following a stunning 36-match winning streak that saw them win six rounds in a row during
the 2021/22 World Series and will tackle either Germany or Chile in their opening game.
With the 'winner takes all' knock-out format, Shakes and his team will need to win every game in order to become
world champions.
Captain of South Africa’s successful 7’s Rugby team, Siviwe ‘Shakes’ Soyizwapi has patience. He waits on the outside,
keeping his eyes focused on the ball, while reading the flow of the game.
The Blitzboks captain won back-to-back 7’s series early in his international career.
He knows his teammates have great finishing touches. He just has to be in the right channel at the right time to receive
the ball and find the try line. His speed and agility will get him there.
His leadership will ensure that his team draws first blood, by using the latest training methodologies to eke out every
marginal gain.
Numerous injuries have faced the Blitzbokke over their busy schedule.
‘Shakes’, however, is back on the team and performing as though his injury woes are well behind him. There is not one
player on the field who can outrun this “Speedster”.
Physicality is key to victory
Bring in JC, recently awarded Man of the Match in ……… It’s no wonder he has been chosen as one of the players in
the overall International Series in his position as flank.
His physicality at breakdowns and game-breaking ability is unsurpassed.
His physical exchanges will help his side win. He is hungry for success every time he takes to the field. He totally
commits to great finishing performances, putting his body on the line in every defensive effort.
We will secure possession of the ball from a stolen turnover by JC. The Captain is again waiting for that magic pass. He
knows where the try line is. He certainly has the winning formula.
Team manager, Neil Powell is quietly confident. His blood runs green.
It’s all about the team
Winning attitude and mental toughness
Dealing with pressure
Need to include a quote from Shakes – “ the team has never been in such great shape – we’re ready for anything that is
thrown at us and with the support on home turf we are in the best shape to take the Cup
