Mathematics 11 Topic:

WORKSHEET # 1.2
1st Trimester, AY 2013-2014 Division of a Line Segment

Directions: Analyze the situations and perform the instructions provided.

1. AB has endpoints at A ( 2,6 ) and B ( 4,−4 ) . The midpoint of AB together with C ( 10,4 ) forms another line segment.
What is the midpoint of this line segment and how long is it? Explain how you will answer this question?

2. The midpoint of MN is ( 2,−1 ) . If the coordinate of M is (−1,−3 ) , what is the coordinate of N? How long is MN ? How
would you obtain the coordinate representing N?

3. The midpoint of PR is Q (− 4,−2 ) , while RT has its midpoint at S (1,−1 ) . Knowing that the coordinate of R is (−2,1 ) ,
what is the length of PT ? Explain your strategy to answer what is asked.

4. A circle has is center at (−2,−2 ) and a radius of 5 units. If a diameter of the circle has an endpoint at ( 1,2 ) , what is the
coordinate at the other end of the diameter? How does the concept of midpoint help with this?

5. The endpoints of AB are A (−7,4 ) and B ( 6 ,−4 ) . Locate the coordinate(s) that would divide AB into three equal parts.
Explain how you obtained the coordinate(s).

6. A line segment has endpoints at A ( 1,5 ) and B ( 6,3 ) . Find the coordinate C(x, y) on AB that is closest to B, and shows that
BC 1
=
AC 4 . How did you obtain this coordinate?

7. ( 3,5 )
and (−3,−5 ) are endpoints of a line segment. This line segment decreases its length such that the new line segment is
only half of the original. The midpoint of the original line segment stays the same after it shortened. What are the new
endpoints of the shortened segment? Explain your approach to solve this problem.

8. A median of a triangle is a line segment joining the vertex of a triangle and the midpoint of the opposite side. A triangle has
vertices ( 4 ,−4 ) , ( 1,1 ) and ( 7,1 ) . Find the point on the median that is two-thirds of the distance from the vertex to the
midpoint of the opposite side. How will you determine the coordinate being asked for?

9. A right triangle has vertices ( 2,2 ) , ( 6,3 ) and ( 5,7 ) . Determine the hypotenuse and locate its midpoint. Is the midpoint
equidistant from the vertices? Show proof of your answer.

10. The diagonals of a parallelogram have the same midpoint. If three consecutive vertices of a quadrilateral are ( 6,0 ) , ( 2,3 ) and
( 6,1 ) , what should be the fourth vertex if the quadrilateral is a parallelogram? Explain how you obtained the fourth vertex.

11. A photo of a crater on Mars was taken and shown here. It takes a circular shape and
the two points that are indicated are endpoints of the diameter. What is the
coordinate of the center of this crater?

12. You are designing a city park like the one shown at the right. You want the park to
have two fountains so that each fountain is equidistant from four of the six park
entrances. The labeled points shown in the coordinate plane represent the park
entrances. Where should the fountains be placed? How far apart should the fountains
be placed? Explain how would you use the past lessons to complete this task.

13. A plan for a basketball half-court is being designed. The markers (points A, B, C,
D, E, and F) where the players place themselves during a free throw is yet to be
determined. It is known that the segment from the edge of the court to the first 6
marker is as long as the segment from the third marker to the free throw line. At D E ( 5.8, 3.9 )
F
which coordinates should the markers be placed following the standards? How did
you determine these coordinates?

C
A B ( 5.8, 2.1 )

14. The road network for a block of a new San Jose Village is being (4, 6)
planned. The illustration at the right shows 5 parallel roads as part of the
plan. It is superimposed with a coordinate plane, where 1 unit = 100
meters. What coordinates represent the endpoints of the parallel roads?
Explain how you determined these coordinates?

(2, 1) (9, 1)

15. The coordinates A (−4,2 ) and B ( 12,2 ) are endpoints of the diameter of the circle whose center is C. The circle with center
D has a diameter with endpoints C and B. the circle with center E has D and B as endpoints of its diameter. What is the value of
AC AC AE BE
each of the following ratios: AB , AD , AB , and BC ? What are the coordinates of points C, D, and E? Explain how you
answered this problem.

C E
A B
