ADVERBS BEFORE ADJECTIVES

 Used to intensify adjectives.


 They can strengthen or weaken the quality.

S + BE + ADVERB + adjective + C.

Adverb Function
Really / very / extremely Strong. They intensify the adjective used.
Fairly / pretty / somewhat Less than… They weaken the adjective used. The quality is present, but at
a limited extent.

Somewhat Pretty / Fairly

Too Impediment. It always expresses a negative aspect.

E.g.: Although Cuenca is a very beautiful city, it’s pretty boring, especially at night.

I don’t think it’s a good idea for tourists to visit Ecuador nowadays because it’s been too dangerous since the pandemic
started.

When I traveled to Italy, I didn’t like Venice because the streets were extremely smelly.

Athens is a really charming city. Besides, it is fairly cheap.

Beaches in Manabi are too relaxing, that’s why I prefer to travel there on vacation.
Wrong. “Too” ALWAYS indicates something bad.
Beaches in Manabí are very relaxing, that’s why I prefer to travel there on vacation.  Correct.

Quito isn’t very fun because there aren’t many good options for people to enjoy.

Don’t forget:

 The indefinite article “a / an” is used only if there’s a noun accompanying the adjective.
Avengers is a very fun.  Wrong. “A / An” needs a NOUN.
Avengers is A very fun movie.  Correct.

 The indefinite article “a / an” is OBLIGATORY in singular if you have a noun.


Madrid is extremely interesting city.  Wrong. “City” is a noun in singular, so “A / An” is OBLIGATORY.
Madrid is AN extremely interesting city.  Correct.
 Never use an indefinite article in plural.
Granada and Málaga are a pretty small cities.  Wrong. “A / An” is EXCLUSIVE to singular.
Granada and Málaga are pretty small cities.  Correct.

 Adjectives are ALWAYS before nouns.


Guayaquil is a city very dangerous.  Wrong. NEVER use adjectives after a noun.
Guayaquil is a very dangerous city.  Correct.
