2. Compound sentences

1. He wakes up early, and he never comes to work late.

3. I proposed to Mario, but he refused.
4. She has a lot of work to do, so she cannot meet her friends this weekend.
5. Tom and his wife had got married for ten years, yet they divorced yesterday.
6. In the globalization era, books are still important, for they are the most reliable source of
knowledge.
7. She does not like Tom, nor does she like Tammy.
8. The poor boy neither has food to eat, nor does he have the house to live.

Practice 3: Identify whether each of the following is a compound sentence or not.

3. Complex sentences

independent clause + dependent clause <Clause = subject + verb>

dependent clause, + independent clause < Adverb clause = subordinator + subject + verb>

Dependent clauses => 1. adverb clauses 2. adjective clauses 3. noun clauses


There are three types of dependent clauses, but at this level only adverb clauses are focused.

Adverb clauses can be classified into many types such as time clauses, concession clauses, reason
clauses, condition clauses, etc.

1. An adverb clause of time


 She had left before I telephoned.
 After he arrives, we will finish.
 As he came into the room, all rose to their foot.
 He was talking on the phone when I arrived.
 Whenever I get angry, my heart beats fast.
 Do not talk while she is singing.
 We waited until he finished his homework.
 As soon as he heard the news, he wrote to me.
 I have played tennis since I was a young boy.

2. An adverb clause of concession


 Even though it was expensive, he bought the car.
 Though he loves doughnuts, he has given them up for his diet.
 Although the course was difficult, he passed with the highest marks.
 I have very little time indeed, whereas you have lots of time to do your homework.
 Mary is rich, while I am poor.

3. An adverb clause of reason


 They received a high mark on their exam because they had studied hard.
 As she wanted to practise her spoken English, Carrie regularly took part in the ELC’s Big Mouth Corner.
 They had to leave early since their train left at 8.30.

**Punctuation tip:
When an adverb clause appears at the beginning of a sentence, separate the clauses with a comma.

Practice 7: Correct the following fragments, run-on sentences, and comma splices.
1. After several delays throughout the afternoon. The game was finally canceled because of rain.

4. Many common foods contain large amounts of sugar. Such as ketchup and hamburger buns.
