REVERSING VEHICLES

H.S.E. reports shows that 25% of plant and vehicle related accidents involved reversing vehicles, so
clearly this is one of the greatest risks that you are exposed to on or near a construction site.

Pedestrians, where possible, should be kept separate from moving vehicles and plant.

You must stay alert at all times, using all your senses. Keep a lookout and listen for vehicles that are
moving. Reversing vehicles should be fitted with both audible and visible warning alarms.

Never cross at the rear of a reversing vehicle as the driver may not have seen you and will not be
expecting you to be there.

Systems must be in place to reduce the amount of reversing vehicles, such as one way traffic, drivers
given instructions as they arrive on site and told where to deliver and who is the "Banksman".

Only reverse vehicles if you have been trained to do so.

If you are not a Banksman do not give signals to a driver, unless in an emergency. The emergency stop
signal is done by raising both hands with the palms facing forward (like a policeman would).

Always wear the high visibility clothing provided.
