and alkalis
What is acid?
Acid: is a substance which contains hydrogen particles
and has a pH lower than 7, the chemical opposites
alkalis.

Acids have a sour, sharp tangy taste.


How can acid be dangerous?
Some acids are strong and corrosive.

corrosive: able to dissolve or eat away other materials such


as your skin.

If a strong acid gets onto your skin it will dissolve the skin.
Q/ what can we do to make
acids less dangerous?
Dilution
A process of decreasing the concentration of a
solute in the solution adding more solvent.

However, diluted acids can still be harmful and


irritated.
Alkalis
Alkalis: is a substance that contains hydroxide particles,
the chemical opposites an acid, it has a pH higher than 7.

Alkalis can be found in many cleaning products.


Acids and alkalis

They are chemical opposites where they cancel


each other out when they are mixed together.
How to work safely with acids and
alkalis?
1. Stand up to work.
2. Wear safety glasses.
3. Take the top of the bottle and place it upside
down.
4. Replace the top of bottle as soon as you finish.
