BUSINESS ETHICS WITH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

ACTIVITY 4
Ethical Dilemma
Should Walmart Close a Store because it Unionizes?

As Walmart being an international company should not have to close store because of
unionism. It should be able to recognize the role trade unions and adjust the demands and
requests from such unions such that win situation is achieved for both the union and the
Walmart company.
Walmart should be aware of freedom of association of workers where by they have the
right to join and form trade unions so that they can bargain collectively for their rights
which is fundamental principle of the ETI Base Code.
Despite provisions of existence of trade unions around the world, both employers and
governments interfere with these rights. Trade union leaders are denied promotion
opportunities, physically abused, arrested or even murdered for standing up for their right
to organised and subscribe to trade unionism union, others leaders are murdered, and
many more were physically assaulted and others sacked.
Its therefore unethical for company to refrain its employees from getting into trade unions.
Instead it should liaise with the unions in efforts to improve working conditions by
participating in the legislation of such laws and regulations such that win win situation for
both the company and employees is achieved.
