Exciting Times
DIRECTIONS: Read and interpret each passage.  

1. When she walked into the room, his heart leapt with joy. It trembled as it 
tracked her movements. Would she approach him? Would she – might she – 
speak to him, and thereby soothe its anxious quivering? 

2. Her stomach growled like a dog suddenly awoken. She ate another cracker, and 
drank cup after cup of water, but the dog would not be soothed. When the nurse 
told her it might be yet another half an hour before she would receive her dinner, 
it was the dog, and not she, who snarled back at the nurse, causing the poor 
woman to jump back in alarm.
