Thomas A. Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11th, 1884.His family moved to
Port Huron, Michigan, when he was seven years old. Surprisingly, he attended school for only
two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a few things, but Thomas was mostly self-
educated. His natural curiosity led him to start experimenting at a young age.
Thomas Alve Edison lit up the world with his invention of the electric light. Although the
electric light seems to be the most useful, it was not his only invention. He also invented the
record player, the motion picture camera, and over 1,200 other things. About every two weeks he
created something new.
He worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so intensely that his wife had
reminded him to sleep and eat.
Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18th, 1931, at his estate in West Orange,
New Jersey. He let numerous inventions that improved the quality of life all over the word.

Are you looking for a cheap, clean, effective source of power that doesn’t cause pollution
or waste natural resources? Look no further than solar energy from our sun. At present, most of
our electricity comes from the use of coal and gas, oil or nuclear power. This power could be
provided by the sun. One percent of the solar energy that reaches the Earth is enough to provide
power for the total population. Many countries are already using solar energy. Solar panels are
placed on the roof of a house and the Sun’s energy is used to heat water. The energy can be
stored for a number of days, so on cloudy days you can use solar energy and cars will use solar
power instead of gas by the year 2015.

For many people the language of the Internet is English. "World, Wide, web: Three
English Words " was the name of an article by Michael Specter in the New York Time a few
years ago. The article went on to say: "If you want to take full advantage of the Internet, there is

In general, it is not difficult to learn to use Internet services. But although Internet
services are rather easy to use, you will have considerable difficulties if you are not familiar with
English. In fact, knowledge of English is one of the most important aspects that help you use the
Internet. Learning to use a new Internet service may take a few hours, a few days, or some

A tornado is a tube of spinning air that touches the ground. Wind inside the tornado,
spinning very fast, makes tornadoes very dangerous.
Tornadoes mostly happen during very strong thunderstorms. They cause a lot of damage to
anything they touch. People die every year from tornadoes.
Tornadoes are ranked on the Fujita scale, from F0 to F5. F0 has the lowest wind speed, and F5
has the highest wind speed.
The United States of America has the most tornadoes every year, but tornadoes can happen in
any country. If a tornado is coming, the safest thing to do is to go to a basement or a bathroom
with no windows. People should never be in a car or a mobile home when there is a tornado near.

of all ages use this medium to entertain themselves for an average of four hours a day. Thus,
television has had a tremendous influence on its viewers, especially children. Scientists now say
that children can be adversely affected by constantly watching television. This is due to the fact
that they participate less in physical activities, spend less time reading and studying, and see a
world of violence that can affect their own feelings of security.

courts and musical centers of Austria, Germany, France, England, Holland, Switzerland and
Italy. It has been calculated that Mozart spent almost a third of his short life - he died at the age
of thirty five – travelling.

Edison's most famous invention was the electric light bulb. He also in vented the
phonograph, and made improvements to the telegraph, telephone and motion picture technology.
Edison had a special life. He married twice with five children. He loved books, had
excellent memory, and always showed curiosity about science. Although he had hearing
problems, he refused to have an operation for his deafness. He said that silence helped him
concentrate. He always worked very hard and often had only four hours of sleep every day. He

A DETERMINED MAN
Christopher Columbus, a famous explorer, was born in Genoa, Italy, about five hundred
years ago. Columbus was a sailor. In his day many people thought that the earth was flat.
Columbus, however, was convinced that the earth was round. He thought that India, which is in
the east, could be reached by sailing west. Columbus thought the earth much smaller than it
really is. He thought that the long voyage to India would be shorter if he would sail west instead
of sailing east.
Columbus first asked the king of Portugal for help. His request was refesed. Next
Columbus outlined his plans to the king of England. Again he was refused. Finally this
determined man went to Spain. For seven years he worked to enlist the help of the Spanish
monarchs, King Ferdinand and Queen Isablella. At last they consented to help him. They gave
him men and ships. The efforts of this determined man was finally successful. He set sail under
the Spanish flag, beginning the voyages that years after his death the would prove that the earth
was round.

AN IMPORTANT FUEL
One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using
natural gas for cooking and heating. Large amounts of natural gas found in the United States,
usually several thousand feet below the surface of the earth. Natural gas is most found in places
where petroleum, the oil from which gasoline is made, is found. Often the natural gas must be
removed before the oil itself is reached.
For many years after natural gas first discovered, it was thought to have no value. Finally,
however, people began to understand its uses and to find ways of storing it and of moving it from
place to place.
Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking, and heating. In
many ways natural gas is one of our finest fuels. It can be used for cooking without making the
room hot. It is cheap and can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines,
some of which are hundreds of miles in length.

TWO FLYING RECORDS
On July 11, 1937, three Russians lefl Moscow, Russia. They flew directly over the North
Pole, crossed the Arctic Ocean and Canada, and flew along the western coast of the United
States. When they finally landed in California, they had flown over six thousand miles in about
sixty-two hours. This nonstop flight was made in a plane with only one motor!
About twenty years later, American aviators flew three jet bombers around the word in a
litter over forty-five hours. In January, 1957, these airplanes traveled over twenty-four thousand
miles without landing.
The 1937 flight averaged a speed of about one hundred miles an hour. This flight was a
great one the history of aviation. The 1957 flights each averaged a speed of about five hundred
miles an hour. What tremendous progress had been made in avition in the space of only twenty
years!
Since that time, more advances have been made. Do you know how fast the jet planes of
today can travel? Do you think as much aviation progress will be made in the next twenty years
as was made between 1937 and 1957?

The moon is the second brightest object in the sky after the sun. It is the only natural
satellite of the Earth and orbits around it. It has a diameter of about 3,476 kilometers and has
many craters on its surface. These were formed by meteor craters millions of years ago. It takes
the moon 27.3 days to make one orbit around the earth and the same period time to complete one
rotation on its axis.
The moon is the only celestisl body that has been visited by human beings. One reason is
that the moon is much closer to the earth than the other planets; it is estimated that the moon is
about 240,000 miles from the earth. We can see it clearly from the earth with naked eyes.
Because it is close to us, the gravitational forces between the earth and the moon cause some
interesting effects. The most obvious is the tides. Under the graviational effect of the moon. This
causes tides when the level of the sea rises and falls.

Mr. Smith gave his wife 10 pounds for her birthday- ten pretty pound notes. So a day
after her birthday, Mrs. Smith went shopping. She queued for a bus, got on and sat down next to
