You have an assignment in an Italian Art Appreciation subject in which you are tasked to look for
artworks featuring Madonna. The only clue given to you by your professor is the word “Madonna,” which
is a word in medieval Italian that refers to a noble or important woman.

How would you search for it?

If you answered letter C, something similar of the following example will appear in the search

DISCUSSION

RESEARCH AND INFORMATION SEEKING

One of the ideal applications laid down for ICT and the World Wide Web is for research and
education. Today, there are number of information sources over the internet, some of which are
presented below.

 Web search engines

These are programs designed to search over the WWW
based on the keywords provided by the user. They
return search results such as Web Sites, files, photos, or
media files that possesses the entered keyword. (e.g. Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.)

 Research indexing sites

These are Web sites dedicated to compile and index researches done
by academic researchers, engineers, social scientist, and so on. These
are also known as the journals of professionals. (e.g. Google Scholar,
IEEE Xplore)

 Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) sites or tutorial sites

Web sites dedicated to teach and inform users focused on different
areas. Lectures and assignments are delivered and submitted,
respectively, online. Various universities around the world offer this
service. (e.g. Coursera, Udemy, etc.)

 Employment Web Sites

These are Web sites that enable companies to post job vacancies
and also accommodate job seekers by providing a resume-
submission facility. (e.g. Jobstreet, JobsDB, etc)

 Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce)

This is a technology that uses electronic means to trade products and
currencies. It also includes any technologies that introduce ease in
business management and customer convenience.
Most of the time it deals with buying and selling products or services
online. (e.g. Lazada, Shopee, etc.)

What are the Research Skills I need to Develop?

1. Check your sources.

Evaluate the information you gather from your sources, whether they are from books, online
articles, news sites, or websites.
2. Ask good questions.
Be specific when entering queries into search engines. You can also use the special keys to use
when searching. See the infographic that follows.

3. Go beyond the surface.

Be persistent in looking for more information regarding your topic. Try looking for other
sources rather sticking to one.

4. Be patient.
Think critically and synthesize the data you have gathered until you yourself can formulate
your own conclusion.

5. Respect ownership.
Remember that everything in the internet has its own respective owner.

6. Use your networks.

Social media and other information tools like the Wikipedia and online forums are useful when
doing research.
AUTHENTICITY VERIFICATION OF INFORMATION FROM THE WEB

With the version of the web we are using nowadays anyone has the freedom
to publish his or her web site regardless of its content. There are no standards
governing content publishing on the World Wide Web to ensure correctness of
information, but there are ways on how to verify if the information is trustworthy
or legitimate.

QUIZ CODE: E-TechParaAbtik

 Published Author’s Name

Most legitimate articles has the name of the person who wrote it. This enable the users to
further research and verify if he or she is credible enough to share such content. Most of the
authors who intentionally writes false articles will not bother to present their names to avoid
responsibility.

 Credible Web Sites

Error-free articles are more likely published by credible web sites. These are web sites of
organizations or companies involved in the field you are searching for. For example: an article
about raising number of COVID-19 cases in the country, it should be coming from the DOH’s
or WHO’s web site.

 Rating, number of viewers, and number of shares

A credible article is more likely to receive a high rating or a normally high number of stars
from reviewers. If the information presented is not true, it has a high probability of getting
low rating and it would show a majority of negative comments in the comment section.

 Reference and related articles

Most of the credible articles include a list of references or articles related to the published
one.
