Rigging
POTENTIAL RISK: INEXPERIENCED OR INCOMPETENT RIGGERS

A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE CAN BE DANGEROUS

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
Rigging operations shall only be performed by competent riggers.
• Other personnel may assist in rigging operations (if experienced). However a rigger shall examine all rigging prior to
commencing a lift.
• Toolbox talks shall be held prior to all major or unusual lifts that all personnel are aware of the operation.

POTENTIAL RISK: LIFTING FROM FIXED OR PARTLY FIXED STRUCTURES

• Serious accidents can occur if lifts are carried out from fixed or partly fixed structures, which are not designed to
support the load.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

• Rigging and slinging from existing equipment and pipework is strictly prohibited.
• Beam clamps shall be utilised wherever possible.
• When rigging and slinging from existing structures, anchor points shall be adequate size and strength to support the lift.
• If lifting from an existing pad eye, all welds shall be checked for cracks by use of NDT.
• If in doubt ask your supervisor

POTENTIAL RISK: INADIQUATELY PLANNED AND/OR UNPLANNED LIFTS

• Serious accidents can occur if lifting operations are not adequately planned.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

• Assess and plan your lift "from start to finish"


• Assess your equipment requirements prior to commencing.
• Area shall be barriered off to protect other personnel
• Lifts shall never be left suspended on rigging for long periods of time.
• All personnel shall be advised of the lift at the toolbox talk stage prior to commencing work.

POTENTIAL RISK: FAULTY LIFTING EQUIPMENT

• Caused by a lack of maintenance, physical damage or by using lifting equipment outside its capabilities (exceeding its
SWL)

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

• Test certificates shall be checked to ensure that they are in date


• Visually inspect all equipment for damage prior to use.
• All equipment shall be of adequate rating to perform operation
• On completion of task, check and return all equipment to storage
• Any damaged equipment shall be quarantined and reported to your supervisor immediately.
• All equipment shall be properly maintained and inspected on a regular basis.

POTENTIAL RISK: UNCONTROLLED LIFTS

• Can cause damage to plant and/or equipment and could also result in serious personnel injury.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

• Where applicable, method of statements shall be read to establish specific precautions necessary
• Single point lifting shall be avoided (where possible)
• If direct lifting is not possible, use of hold backs/tag lines shall be utilized to avoid the load from swimming.

• Lifting/rigging operations shall be carried out to approve codes of practice.
• Short cuts cause accidents. Do not take risks.
• Barrier off area prior to commencing operations.
• If in doubt ask your supervisor

POTENTIAL RISK: NIPS, CUTS, SLIPS AND TRIPS

• Can occur through handling materials without sufficient personnel protective equipment (PPE) or by poor housekeeping
standards.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

• Suitable personnel protective equipment shall be used at all times.


• Safety harnesses shall be worn (and attached) when working at height of 2 meters and over.
• Work areas shall kept clean and tidy to prevent slips and trips
 Unused equipment shall be checked and returned to storage
• Any potential hazards not identified in this assessment shall be noted and raised during toolbox talks prior to work
commencing and controls implemented.
 Anti-cut gloves shall be used when using rigging knives to erect wind sheeting or habitats.
