Subject: Networking 2
(Zareena A. Dimaano)

Instructions: Discuss and explicate each question, before you begin writing, read the passage
carefully and plan what you will say. Your essay should be well organized
and carefully written as you make it.

1. List the 4 types of computer network. Briefly explain each and give
example.
o LAN (Local Area Network) - LAN computer networks connect a few
nearby locations, such as a few houses, buildings, offices, etc. Computers
are arranged relatively close together in a LAN computer network. Since
computers are close together, connecting them does not require the use
of specialized hardware or connections.
The following image shows an example of a LAN network

o MAN (Metropolitan Area Networks) - A MAN network can span a city. It

links a minimum of two LAN networks. If connecting two LAN networks is
not feasible due to distance, a MAN network is used in the middle to
connect them. LAN is smaller than MAN, while WAN is larger. The LANs
are connected using specialized equipment and wires.
The following image show an example of a MAN network.

o WAN (Wide Area Network) - A state, region, country, or other broad

geographic areas, for example, is covered by WAN computer networks.
WANs are frequently used to link two or more LANs or MANs that are
situated a great distance apart from one another. A WAN network
employs specialized equipment, connections, and technology to offer
connectivity.
The following image shows an example of a WAN network.

The above categorization (LAN, MAN, and WAN) of computer networks is

purely based on geographical location. It has nothing to do with the
number of computers in each network.

For example, if one computer is located in Delhi and the other computer is
located in Mumbai, then connecting these two computers is an example of
WAN networking. Similarly, if a company starts a new branch office with
500 computers and all these computers are installed in the same building,
then this network will be considered a LAN network.

o PAN (Personal Area Network) - PAN is similar to LAN but is limited to a

specific individual or location such as a home network. This network is
usually set up within personal computers to share resources such as the
Internet and printers, and etc.

2. Computer system can be divided into four approximate components what

are they? Briefly explain each.

The Four Components of Computer System are:

 Input Unit - Commonly known as an Input Device, it is used to give

instructions or raw data to the system for processing. The common
examples of input devices
are mouse, keyboard, joystick, scanner, touch screen, OMR (optical
mark reader), OCR (optical character reader), etc.
 Output Unit - Also known as Output Device, is used to display the
processed information. The common type of output devices for displaying
the processed information are VDU, printer, speakers, LCD
panel, multimedia projector, etc.
 Processing Unit - It is the main component of a computer where the actual
processing of input data occurs and gives a meaningful result at the
output unit. It is commonly known as the central processing unit, in
short, CPU, and also considered to be the brain of the computer. CPU is
further subdivided into the Control Unit and Arithmetic Logic
Unit (ALU).
 Storage Unit – Also known as Storage Devices, this unit plays a
significant role in the functioning of the computer. Every instruction or
data received from the input unit is stored in the memory unit. It holds the
intermediate and final results before they are sent to the output device for
display of the result.
