Name: Bauxite

Characteristics: White, gray, sometimes stained


yellow, orange, red, pink, or brown by iron or
included iron minerals.

Significance: Bauxite is typically a soft, white to


grey to reddish brown material with an earthy
luster. Large bauxite deposits are usually found as
flat layers near the surface. Typically extracted by
strip mining • Overburden soil layer removed.

Name: Cobalt

Characteristics: Cobalt is a hard ferromagnetic,


silver-white, hard, lustrous, brittle element. It
is a member of group VIII of the periodic table.
Like iron, it can be magnetized.

Significance: Currently, the traditional areas of


consumption and application of cobalt are
mainly battery materials, super heat-resistant
alloys, tool steels, hard alloys, magnetic
materials; cobalt in the form of compounds is
mainly used as catalysts, desiccants, reagents,
pigments and dyes
