If two or more forces are acting simultaneously at a point, the same effect can be
produced by a single force of the proper size and direction. This single force, which is
equivalent to the action of two or more forces, is called the resultant. Putting
component forces together to find the resultant force is called composition of forces.

Let R be the resultant force of forces and let θ be the inclination of the resultant
force with the line of action of the force.

Example 4: For the system of parallel forces shown below, determine the
magnitude of the resultant and also its position from A.

Solution:
R = √ (ΣFy)2 + (ΣFx)2 , since ΣFx = 0 → R = ΣFy
(+↑) ΣFy = +100 -200 -50 +400 = 250N (+↑)

Example 5: If know that two compositions perpendicular for the specific force are
Fx=400N & Fy=300N, calculate the force quantity and direction, the angle that
make with the line.

Solution:
𝐹𝐴𝑦 300
𝜃 = 𝑡𝑎𝑛−1 → 𝜃 = 𝑡𝑎𝑛−1 = 36.87°
𝐹𝐴𝑥 400

300
F𝑥 = F ∗ Sin36.87° → 300 = F ∗ Sin36.87° → F= ° = 500N
Sin36.87
400
F𝑦 = F ∗ Cos36.87° → 400 = F ∗ Cos36.87° → F= ° = 500N
Cos36.87
2
𝐹 = √(𝐹𝑥 )2 + (𝐹𝑦 ) → 𝐹 = √(300)2 + (400)2 → 𝐹 = √2500 → F = 500N

Example 5: Determine the resultant for the

multi force shown and its direction.
Solution:
+→ ∑Fx = 400 − 200 Cos30 −
300 Cos60 + 300Cos60 = 226.8 N

+↑ ∑𝐹𝑦 = 200 Sin30 − 300 Sin60

− 300 Sin60 = −126.8N
2
𝑅 = √(𝐹𝑥 )2 + (𝐹𝑦 )

𝑅 = √(226.8)2 + (−126.8)2

𝑅 = 259.8N
𝐹𝐴𝑦 −126.8
𝜃 = 𝑡𝑎𝑛−1 𝐹 → 𝜃 = 𝑡𝑎𝑛−1 ( 226.8 )
𝐴𝑥
𝜃 = −29.2°

Example 9: The two forces shown act at point

A of the bent bar. Determine the resultant R of
the two forces.
Solution:
(ΣFx) +→ Fx= 3Cos30o+7Cos45o=2.35kN
(ΣFy) +↑ Fy= 3Sin30o+7sin45o= -3.45kN

R = √ΣFx 2 + ΣFy 2
R = √(2.35)2 + (−3.45)2
R = 4.17 kN

Example 10: If ∅ = 30° and the resultant force

acting on the gusset plate is directed along the
positive 𝒙 axis determine the magnitude of 𝐅𝟐
and resultant force.

Solution:
R = √ΣFx 2 + ΣFy 2
a resultant force acting on the gusset plate is
directed along the positive 𝒙 axis → Fy=0

∴ R = Fx
Fy = 0 = 3.46 − Fy2 + 3 → Fy2 = 6.46 kN

F𝑦 2= F2 ∗ Sin 30° → 6.46 = F2 ∗ (0.5) → F 2= 12.92 KN

4
R = ΣFx = − 4 ∗ Sin30o + 5 ∗ 5 + 12.92 * cos 30o

R = 13.18kN →
