EXPERIMENT 08
AM Modulation using Balanced Modulator
Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to practically demonstrate the process of
Amplitude Modulation.

Equipment:
 AM Modulator and AM Demodulator (ACS-3000-02-3/4)
 Function Generator
 Oscilloscope
 Connecting wires
Background:
Amplitude modulation, AM, is defined as a system of modulation in
which the amplitude of carrier is made proportional to the
instantaneous amplitude of the modulating voltage, whose frequency is
invariably lower than that of the carrier. In practice, the carrier may be
a High Frequency (HF) while the modulating signal is audio. The
waveform of an amplitude-modulated signal is shown in Figure 1.
Figure 2 shows an AM modulator as a product modulator.

Circuit Diagram:

Measurement:

1. On Function Generator (I), set the audio signal to 1 kHz/100 mV.

2. On Function Generator (II), set the carrier signal to 500 kHz/300 mV.

3. On ACS-3000-02 module, jumper J1, and let J2 remain open.

4. To input the carrier signal, patch Output (red) on Function Generator (2), to carrier input
port Carrier I/P on ACS3-2.

5. To input the audio signal, patch Output (red), on Function Generator (1), to Audio I/P of
ACS3-2.
6. Connect the AM output port AM O/P1 (AM O/P2) to an oscilloscope. Use VR2 to set the
carrier level of AM signal to maximum amplitude. Set the index of modulation to 50% by
VR1.

7. Also, read the signals at test points TP3, TP4, TP1, and TP2.
8. Use the spectrum analyzer to observe the frequency spectrum of the amplitudemodulated
signal at AM O/P1, AM O/P2, and at TP5 and TP6.
Lab Task:
Generate an audio signal of 3 kHz/100 mVand a carrier signal of 500 kHz/300 mVand
implement AM Modulation and fill in the table.

Conclusion: in this lab we learn about the demonstration of the process of

Amplitude and in which the amplitude of carrier is made proportional to
the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating voltage, whose
frequency is invariably lower than that of the carrier. In practice, the
carrier may be a High Frequency (HF) while the modulating signal is
audio.
