ART OF DOCUMENT
FIRST IDEAS
For my minor project I have already gathered 5 ideas thanks to the plot and character session with
Adriene yesterday.

1. Mad person hates law so makes own country on their property

2. Kidnapped females turn femme fatale These were the first ideas I
had, as we can see, story 1 is
closest to my final story.
3. Safari gone wrong

4. Phone addict switches body with their uncared for house pet

5. Man finds keys and gets in wacky adventures

I will take these ideas further, once I find one I like the most.

Screenplay By Shaiheim Henry-Ovid

1.INT. POSTAL SERVICE - DAY

A man is complaining to the worker at the postal service about
his spam of letters when he never bothers to read them.
Man
(angrily)
Nowz, youz be a listening here, I dunt wan na stankan meeail
knoaah mooarea
{Translation- listen to me, I don’t want any more trash mail
from you any more}
The man is escorted out by security guards.
2.EXT. MAN’S PROPERTY - DAY
The man plants a flag pole in a crack between his front porch.
The man then goes inside his house, gets an A 3 piece of paper
with some writing tools and designs a logo of him as a
silhouette with the words ‘THIS IS NOW MY COUNTRY’ in a crude
red marker.
FIRST MOODBOARD
I was not
sure on the
artstyle that
I wanted yet
so I made
some
references
of images
that would
inspire me.
FIRST STORYBOARD
This is my first storyboard I
sketched, it has the old man in
not much detail and the
background is not clear either.
FIRST CHARACTER DESIGNS

These are my first designs of

my characters. He had to be
old, I was not sure about the
other details he needed.
FIRST 3D TEST

This is my first 3D test and

my first coloured version of
my flag. I made it the Ireland
flag with a red box and a
crow on top. I animated it to
react to the wind.
CHARACTER DE-AGING
Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCVZt9qIgec After watching a YouTube video I
decided to break my story down
even more and found out that
GENRE - SLICE OF LIFE making him younger would make
the story better.
PLOT - BATTLING NOSTALGIA

CHARACTERS - OBNOXIOUS BOY

THEME - KEEP MOVING FORWARD

A boy is about to be moving houses and he has to go through his old belongs to see what to keep or throw away. Every time he touches
an object he has flashbacks of his memories. This leads to him protesting on his front lawn and making his house it’s own country by a
flag with toys, clothes and stickers scattered around like a fort to delay the moving process. This is a slight retelling, but the flag research
and art style are still relevant.

Title will be: Honey, that boy is pretending his house is a country I chose this Title because of such turtles like ‘Honey, I shrunk the kids’
imply a story from an older man’s tale, so the thumbnails of the old men could be first person, still relating.
SECOND SCRIPT

This is the second script I made, actually

considering an ending. This was
showing my ideas getting much more
fleshed out.
PALLET
The gender if my character is unknown yet but they like familiarity and complacency and they dislike change. To really show this the clothes
they wear should look worn out, showing that they cling on to the past, scuffs, patches details like this, even damp colouring. The day is
early so eyebags would be a good touch and maybe yawning with twitching eyes, but that will be finalized when I get to the design. If they
end up having hair little pieces of fluff should be in there to show roughness in their look. Their fingernails could be long and cut roughly.
Plasters would help too.
When doing the colours and younger designs I thought
about how this character would behave in the story more,
as I had the script sorted, at least going in the right
direction.

boots - black pajamas - purple mittens - red This is a first draft, but I want the flag' colours to reflect the tones of my character's attires.

Now as I sort of had designs in mind, I thought about the colours

that would suit the character from my flag research way back.
CHARACTER BOY THUMBNAILS

These are the thumbnails for the boy character, at

this point I was unsure if he was even going to be
human, I even considered him being a girl.
ENVIRONMENT SKETCH THUMBNAILS AND
DIGITAL THUMBNAILS

This was a sketch of the environment, I did I used the sketch and changed it in different ways to
this as I have only focused on the character so give me lots pof digital versions of it. I used black
far. This helped with the character’s and white as in class we was told getting the tones
personality with toys on the floor. right makes colouring easier.
CLOTHING MOODBOARD

I made a moodboard of clothes

so I can get good angles and
different styles for what the
character would wear.
DRAWINGS FROM MOODBOARD

After doing the

moodboard I did some
drawings inspired by the
work I saw.
COMPOSITION LESSON 1

To learn
composition for
own scenes we
studied other
artist works,
breaking it down
into simple
shapes.
COMPOSITION LESSON 2

I applied composition to
locations and chose Toy Story
because I wanted my
environment to look like a film
that I really like.
THIRD SCRIPT

Doing the composition exercises really

helped with my story and script, I
numbered the scenes so that I could
remember their placement.
LEARNING SUBSTANCE PAINTER

We learned a new software called substance

painter, this was to help out texturing.
TITLE FIGURED OUT AND STORY SUMMARY
Change is always bad summary-

‘A deep sleeping boy hates moving as he’s got friends and has customized he’s room with his own flag, but once he makes a
friend that has interest one off he’s toys he brings along, it eases him in to thee transition to finally claim this new place as his
and a seal of approval of the same flag from his room ’.

I chose the title because I want the story to show

the boy thinking negative at first about moving,
but realising it’s not as bad as he thought.
CLEANER SCRIPT
My script was going
well, I just forgot to
say why the boy did
not want to move.
BOY THUMBNAILS It was now very clear
about the character’s
personalities.

FRIEND

MUM

DAD

LITTLE GIRL
DRAFT STORYBOARD
A lot of this ended up being
inspiration for my final
storyboard, the story is the
kid not wanting to go to the
new home but eventually
ends up liking it due to a
friend.
SCRIPT
As I got my script
finalised and tested
out with a storyboard,
I was ready to get on
to finalising the
designs.
DAD DESIGN CHANGE

Before the project during the

summer I made this character, so
I thought it would suit my story,
especially as the son is already
based off this design with ginger
hair.
PURPLE GAUNTLET DESIGNS

The point of my story is that the boy does

not want to change, but the little girl has a
common interest in the purple gauntlet
superhero show and that’s what makes
him willing to adjust to his new
surroundings.
BOY’S OTHER LIKEABLE SUPERHEROES

It would be boring only to

repeat one logo, so to
make the boy’s room more
colourful I added minor
heroes who he likes, but to
a lesser extent.
KEY ENVIRONMENTS GREYSCALE

To focus on tone and the lessons on composition, I made all my environments in

greyscale, which made me more considerate and made a better piece of art overall.
PURPLE GAUNTLET 3D MODEL

Using the orthography I

made the purple gauntlet
figure, I specifically
modeled him not for
animation.
CHARACTER TURNAROUNDS

Just like the purple

gauntlet, I made
orthographic/turnaroun
ds for the human
characters that I would
design for rigging and
animation.
These are my final characters with their
FINALISED CHARACTER colour pallet included for when i’m
DESIGNS applying the correct colours in Maya.
BLOCK OUT ANIMATION

To help with timing and

composition I used
simple geometry to
plan out my story in 3D.
TITLE DESIGN

This is my title design, it is purple the same

as purple gauntlet as the joining interest in
the superhero drives the story.
FINAL STORYBOARD AND ANIMATIC

II made the storyboard with rule of thirds to help with camera

placement. i then put them together for an animatic adding
transitions and different timing and pacing.
LITTLE GIRL 3D MODEL

The modelling of the Little Girl character was difficult, I resulted in a tutorial of a boy and then changed when I
had enough information. For the body I used a girl to make the reference, n he end, the character surprisingly
turned out better than the character design that had large eyes and a squarish jaw.
BOY 3D MODEL

The boy was easier to model as I stopped at a certain point with the Little Girl and altered it.
MUM 3D MODELLING

With the Mum, I struggled modelling

the face and body, so I just left her
as legs, it makes sense as parents
in old cartoons are so tall you don’t
see their whole body on screen.
DAD 3D MODELLING

With the Dad, I struggled modelling

the face and body, so I just left him
as legs, it makes sense as parents in
old cartoons are so tall you don’t see
their whole body on screen.
COLOURED STORYBOARD SHOTS

To make modelling
easier, I used my
storyboard and coloured
it in so I know the tones
i’m going for, just like my
characters colour is
important, i’m not trying
to make a greyscale
story.
OLD HOUSE 3D MODELLING

II wanted to go with my concept art, but

through lessons and enjoyment, my work
turned out differently than expected.
FLAT IN DISTANCE 3D
MODELLING
This is where the car
scenes happen, and the
flat in the distance tells
the audience where the
car is heading to.
BOY OLD BED 3D MODELLING

This is the boy’s old

bedroom with the stickers
of his favourite
superheroes, it is brown
as the wood is old and the
paint has been drained.
LIFT 3D MODELLING

The lift was interesting to model, making sure

I only showed two sides, but I modeled the
whole scene as I knew from my storyboard
that the back wall was shown at times.
NEW BED MODELLING
This is the boy’s new
bedroom. The
purples are the same
as purple gauntlett to
show it’s tailored for
him.
PARENTS BEDROOM 3D MODELLING

I modelled the parents bed, to make sure all my models were on scale, I
would insert a character to see if it made them look like a giant or an ant, it
kept everything scaled realistically.
FLAT DOORS 3D MODELLING

The flat doors were done smartly, as I

imported the lift scene, so the
environment could naturally flow
together.
SAD WALK TO CAR 3D MODELLING

This scene was done quite

easily, once adding the
updated car I rescaled the
ground plane and kept the sky
the same.
FLAT ROOMS 3D MODELLING

This is the flat where the boy and

little girl meet, I made them copies
of each other meaning I can rotate
the wall and it will still look like it’s
the same place.
PREVIZ EDITING After having all my scenes ready, I
used Adobe Premiere Pro and used
sound and transitions to make my
3D animated pieces with several
different versions.

INTRO BACKSTORY STORYBOARD SCENES

This is the backstory of my story, it may work or

not, but it basically makes the relationship
between the boy and his friend stronger, so when
he moves the audience is more sympathetic.
BUTTERFLY IDEA

To break up potentially boring scenes I thought to add a butterfly for the camera to focus on, but it turned out to
be a bigger distraction than intended, especially as the model did not go well anyways.
SCHOOL OUTFIT

I thought about a scene where he enters school, so I made the texture and mottled
headphones onto him, though it is not certain this scene will be included.

Learning from Jason Michael Hall

Jason Michael Hall is a professional previz artist having worked with Marvel,
Disney, Universal and Warner.Bros. With his Gnomon tutorial I learned the
pipeline of previz and how much planning goes into a scene from a studio’s
standard. Overall it was very helpful to my minor project.
Limit the scenes
In the end I decided this beginning part involving the boy at the school could be
used and developed for Major so I solidified draft version 8 as my final piece.
https://shenryblogucayr3.blogspot.com/2023/01/minor-change-is-always-bad-final-previz.html

This link is also a review, but overall I feel like my choice to make this project
personal got me engaged to progressing in it further than my previous projects.
This emotional attachment was meaningful. Therefore it was essential to keep
momentum and in the end, I learned more about myself technically, creatively
and mentally. If I were to do this project again I would probably choose a story
which is filmed in first person to make the story similar to VR, as I briefly gamed
in my younger days.
