OSSSGOE ey Essential Drawing Tools and Materials CHALLENGE In this lesson, you are challenged to: + identify the different tools and materials used in illustrations + discuss the functions/uses of each drawing tool + use the different tools in starting a drawing + value the importance of each drawing tool } Drawing is a vital form of art done by creating illustrations on a flat surface. When you simply write or print your name using any drawing medium, drawing is already created. In this lesson, you will learn and be oriented on the different tools and materials used in drawing. You will get instructions and techniques on how to use these tools and materials effectively and creatively. Also, you will be taught the basic steps in drawing and illustrating GETTING STARTED One usually starts his/her masterpiece by using a pencil or a pen, an eraser, and a sheet of paper. Traditionally, drawing tools can be categorized as dry media and wet media. Dry media include pencils, charcoals, chalks, crayons, and pastels. Wet media include pens, markers, brushes, inks, and paints. In digital illustrations, the computer is used as the main digital tool to produce images under the direct management of an illustrator/artist who uses a pointing gadget that is typically a graphics tablet or a mouse. Here are some important drawing tools and materials to consider to get started in drawing. 1. Pencil. This basic drawing tool is a simple hexagonal wood-encased tool containing lead or graphite rod and usually topped with a pinkish eraser. This is used for drawing, illustrating, doodling, writing, or sketching. The pencils core is made up of graphite and clay mixed together. Pencils are labeled with letters and numbers, which are codes indicating the grade of lead softness or hardness of a pencil. There are two measures or scales used to label pencil’s graphite hardness and shade: the numeric graphite scale and the HB graphite scale. As the number goes higher, the pencil’s core is getting harder and the pencil’s shade or mark is getting softer or lighter. The HB scale indicates the hardness of a pencil and the blackness of a pencil’s mark or shade through the letters H for hard and B for black. Thus, a pencil labeled BB means that it is very black while if it is labeled as HH, it means very hard. As a beginner, it is recommended that you use HB for easy shading, hatching, and controllable shaping. 2. Colored Pencil. Colored pencils are among the available drawing media that typically consist of a waxy core of colors, each covered with a wooden tube. There are also water-soluble pencils that dissolve like watercolor when manipulated with a wet brush. LOLOL) 29 | 30 Charcoal. Charcoal is a well-known drawing and illustration tool made up of carbon or ash. It is usually produced by means of pyrolysis or wood burnt. Charcoal can produce a monochromatic, dark, or matte black by smudging with the fingers or any other smudge tool. Charcoal work tends to smudge more easily and is more difficult to erase than a graphite work. charcoal pencil HU) \ charcoal powder charcoal stick charcoal square artist pastels Chalk. This is typically a powdery substance made up of limestone, gypsum, or talc. It is considered as one of the oldest art media. Drawing chalk comes in different sizes and types, like Sanguine (blood red color chalk from Italy), Conté crayons (hard chalk made of powdered graphite blended with wax, grease, or clay), and pastel chalk. Pastel. A pastel is an artists medium made up of pigments mixed with binders such as gum arabic, gum tragacanth, methyl cellulose, or pumice to abrade effectively on a drawing surface. Pastels are either dry or wet. Dry pastel media consist of soft pastels, pan pastels, hard pastels, and pastel pencils while wet pastels consist of oil pastel and water-soluble pastel pastel pencils chalk pastel S pan pastel oil pastel Crayon. A crayon is also known as a colored wax pastel made up of charcoal, wax, or chalk. Crayons are non-toxic. They can be bought in boxes with a variety of colors. In order to make crayons, charcoal, wax, or chalk are combined, heated up, melted, molded, and then packed into boxes. Pen. A pen serves as a basic writing instrument or drawing medium that uses ink to write or draw on a surface. In the past, use of reeds, quills, ink brushes, and dips were practiced by artists. LO Luh al In modern times, technical drawing pens, fiber-tipped pens, ballpoint pens, fountain pens, markers, and rollerball pens are widely distributed and used for illustration, writing, and other tasks. sketch pen rollerball pen fiber-tipped pen _ technical drawing pen . Ink. Ink is a fluid or resin paste comprising of colorants, pigments, or dyes. Itis used to color art ona sketch pad, canvas, piece of paper, or any surface to create well-defined illustrations, images, texts, or any form of art. It can be a good medium for illustration, drawing, or writing with a pen, brush, ballpoint, marker, or a quill. Ink is impossible to rub so using it in illustration and drawing is a challenging activity. This art medium is also used in printing press, T-shirt printing, portable printers, or any large-scale printing for commercial use. . Brush. This is an artist's tool used for applying ink, watercolor, paint, make- up. and the like. It is usually made up of bristles and has a handle gripped by a ferrule. Brushes, as well as the bristles, come in different shapes, sizes, and styles, such as round, flat, bright, filbert, fan, angle, and even rigger. It is ideal for making quick illustrations or sketches, when drawing plates in school or drawing outdoor sceneries when laying out a painting, when doing interior design, and more. It comes in different sizes, bindings, and textures. POUT) 31 | LTT ist 13. 14. Paper. Paper is an essential drawing substance produced from nature, using fibers from trees. It is a basic material with its surface used for drawing, writing, or printing. It is also used in the manufacture of packaging and cleaning materials, and various home ornaments. Paper is one of the more popular materials that are recyclable and put to good uses. In illustration, most artwork is accomplished by using only a sheet of paper. Paper is available in different textures, sizes, colors, types, thickness, and weight. Bond paper, writing pad, Oslo paper, and specialty paper are just some examples of paper used for writing and drawing, Watercolor. Watercolor is an artist's medium made up of water-soluble natural or synthetic pigments, solvent and binders’ extracts which when mixed with water create an interesting artwork. It can be a transparent or opaque substance ideal for both transparent light and strong shadows, depending on the amount used in every part of a drawing and the degree of its dilution in water. Artist's Eraser. An eraser is an illustrator and artist's tool for removing unwanted Sar markings, shadings, crafting highlights, and SS detailing work, for erasing unnecessary drawings, for removing charcoals and QV graphite markings, and for removing pencil cD SS 3 marks and other particles in the areas of y the drawings. There are varieties of erasers that an illustrator considers and uses. Examples are vinyl eraser, Pink Pearl eraser, peel-off pencil type eraser, gum type. kneadable eraser, and Blu-Tac. Workstation/Drawing Table. For an individual or artist to layout his/her work seamlessly, he/she may set up a work area with bright and enough space. A workstation with a track lighting, frame, soft white light fluorescent/CFL, a window for natural lighting, and a drawing table is an ideal and cool drawing area that will stimulate an artist's creativity. drawing table Digital Tools and Equipment. After making a hand-drawn illustration, the art needs to be scanned. It must undergo the process of tracing, the drawing to be recreated as digital illustration using a graphic design software. The result is a new digital art. To do this, you need a scanner, a digitizer or digital eC drawing tablet with stylus, a mouse, an application software (PaintTool SAI, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, drivers), and a computer workstation. You will need a printer as well to produce an output. drawing tablet CHECKPOINT DRAWING ART ESSENTIALS Draw the given tools, equipment, or materials below in their corresponding boxes.
