CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Schools are important for a person's development since they are the first
whereby kids engage in a formal education process that gives them basic
information, allowing them to identify and hone the skill they already possess,
need to develop into effective, self-sufficient individuals. The outcome of this
initial education procedure establishes both the likelihood of access to
university education and as well as long-term results like potential future
earnings. These factors make it.It's crucial to comprehend the educational
aspects that have a direct impact on students' learning and the quality of
education they receive.
Bullying, a process in which one person repeatedly uses his superior strength
or influence to mistreat, attack or force another person to do something, is one
of the main problems of schools environment (Unicef, 2007b). Examples of
such behavior include derogatory comments, physical assaults, and social
exclusion, where the key factor is the existence of power imbalance between
the perpetrator and the victim. It is a serious problem that can affect a
student’s school experience and one that has only recently begun to receive
attention. Besides affecting the self-esteem of the assaulted, it often results in
situations in which both victims and perpetrators miss learning opportunities,
diminishing the quality of their education and therefore their academic
achievement.
Shafqat (2015, p. 45) argued that bullying in schools occurs in any place either
in school building or around school building and may occur in bathrooms,
school buses and during waiting for school buses, and in classes which may
require group work or after school activities. School bullying is a widespread
issue that affects school students in many parts of their lives such as;
psychologically, educationally and professionally. Sekol and Farrington (2016)
found that bullies, compared to non-bullies have been bullied before,
Academic achievement is impacted by bullying at school because it alters
students' personality qualities and self-confidence while also making bullied
students feel weak and afraid. Because of this, harassed children find it
difficult to follow or pay attention to their studies, and they may even begin to
dislike going to school. Many researchers found that there is a strong
relationship between bullying academic achievement,. Students lose
concentration when they are attending their classes.

1.5 Theoritical and Conceptual Framework

Bullying has become a national epidemic and the behavior of bullying can be
examined by looking at it through the lens of Social Learning theory. According
to the social learning theory as described in Berger,(2015) it's an extension of
behaviorism that emphasizes the influence that other people have over a
person's behavior, stating that every person learns through observation and
imitating other people's behavior. This means the bulling behavior was learned
by his/her imitation of someone else or a group of other people. According to
(Swearer, Wang, Berry & Myers, 2014) Social learning theory also knows as
social cognitive theory can be used to explained aggressive bullying behaviors,
for example youth who are exposed to domestic violence in the home are more
likely to bully others than those who aren't exposed to domestic violence and
the same goes with children who socialize with aggressive peers: they are more
likely to show aggressive behaviors toward others than those who do not
socialize with aggressive peers. It is apparent that students who bully others is
a result of what they see or what is being done to them. They are hurting and
the root is unresolved emotional issues from witnessing violence in their homes
or from their peers or both.
