CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Parental Involvement in the learning activities of their

children and the perceived impact of parents on their

children's achievement is of continuing interest to

educators as they are trying to find ways to improve the

academic achievement of their students. In RA No 10533 basic

education is intended to meet basic learning needs which

provide the foundation on which subsequent learning can be

based. It encompasses kindergarten, elementary and secondary

education as well as an alternative learning system for out-

of-school learners and those with special needs.

Parental Involvement refers to a situation where parents

are actively involved in their children's education, they

participate in their children’s learning both independently

and in conjunction with the school and teachers, and they

upload their parental responsibilities by ensuring that

their children receive the most support possible as they

pursue their educational goals. It includes more than just

parents getting involved in their kids’ communication in an

effort to build a strong bond with them and provide genuine

encouragement, mentoring, leading, and motivating (Clinton

and Hattle, 2013). And according to Dawkis (2017), parental

participation promotes a supportive school environment and

conveys to the administration and kids that parents are

concerned about their children and want them to succeed.

Additionally, it can lessen or completely stop negative

behaviors, and pupils will feel proud that their parents are

participating and occasionally learning alongside them.

Children who have parents who are actively involved in their

education and schools do better academically and on

standardized tests, behave better at home and school, have

better social skills, and adjust better to school. Kimberly

(Cited in verywell family, 2020).

According to Garbacz et al. (2017), improving children's

self-esteem and academic performance, have a positive

relationship between parental involvement in education and

academic achievement (Pérez Sánchez et al. 2013, Tárraga et

al. 2017). as well as school retention and attendance (Ross,

2016).

The researchers conducted a pre-survey for 12 random

students in grade 11 stem students at Sta. Elena (Cam Norte)

College Inc. The pre-survey aims to know and justify that

our research problem really exists.

According to the result of the pre-survey that the

researchers conducted. 58.3% of the students said that

their parents help/teach them with their studies at school,

followed by a few students who said that their parents do

not help/teach them with their studies at school.

According to the pre-survey, the majority of the students

which is 75% discussing their academic needs with their

parents, and there were only 2 students who said that

sometimes they are discussing their academic needs with

their parents, and only 1 student choose no.

According to the pre-survey, their parents help them in

their studies by helping them improve their grades to study

diligently and they are always beside them supporting them

through thick and thin which is according to the 4 students.

Researchers asked 12 random students, are they happy or

delighted when their parents proudly compliment another

family member other family members. The result shows that

83.3% students answered yes.

As a result of the conducted pre-survey. The researcher

identifies that the research topic/problem is existing for

the students of grade 11 stem students in Sta. Elena (Cam

Norte) College Inc. which is the effect of parental

involvement on the academic performance of the students.

The Researchers conducted the study at Sta Elena (Cam

Norte) College Inc. which is located at P.10 Pob. Sta. Elena

Camarines Norte

The aim of this study is to give schools a crucial

chance to enhance the present curriculum by including

parents in the educational process and interaction between

home and school, encouragement of at-home learning, and

participation in school activities. The student’s grades

rise as a result of their increased motivation to learn.

Additionally, it helps to enhance students’ conduct in the

classroom.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the effects of parental

involvement on the academic performance of grade 11 stem

students.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following:

1. What are the teacher factors influencing academic

performance along with:

a. Attitude

b. Teaching style

c. Instruction

2.  What are the parental factors influencing academic

performance in terms of:

      a. Communication

      b. Parental Involvement

      c. Incentive

3. What is the extent of teacher and parent factors’

correlation in academic performance?

4. What implications can be derived based on the finding of

the study?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be undertaken to find out the

importance and effect of parental involvement on the

academic performance of grade 11 stem students at Sta. Elena

(Cam Norte) College Inc. Benefiting the study are the

various factors as follows:

Students. This study will benefit the students to have

an idea and knowledge of how parental involvement affects

their academic performance.

Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the

teachers. Through this research, teachers may discover the

positive impact and the attitudes of students that are

affected by parental involvement in the academic performance

of grade 11 stem students.

Parents. This research benefits the parents. Through

this study, parents will be given the opportunity to know

the importance of their involvement in their child's

education and what are the effects when a student does not

have parental involvement.

School Administration. This study will benefit the

school administration. Through this research, the school

administration may purposefully discover the positive and

negative effects of parental involvement on the academic

performance of grade 11 stem students.

Future Researcher. We also conducted this study for the

benefit of the future researcher which will serve as a

reference and guide for their expected research study.

DepEd. This study will be beneficial to DepEd. Through

this research, DepEd may purposefully recognize the effects

of parental involvement on students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The main focus of this study is to determine how

parental involvement affects the academic performance of

grade 11 stem students in Sta. Elena (Cam Norte) College

Inc.

The study is limited to answering the following

questions: What is the teacher factors influencing academic

performance along with attitude, teaching style, and

instruction What are the parental factors influencing

academic performance in terms of communication, parental

involvement, and incentive? What is the extent of teacher

and parent factor correlation to academic performance?

This study is delimited only to the grade 11 stem

students since there are a lot of students in Sta. Elena

(Cam Norte) College Inc.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Academic Performance. According to Melissa J. Bell

(2018), academic performance was often measured more by ear

than today. Teachers' observations alone made up the bulk of

the assessment. The summation or numerical method of

determining how well a student is performing is a fairly

recent invention that is used in conjunction with teacher

evaluations of students.

Attitude. According to Soetrust (2021) An attitude is

the way in which an individual actively adapts to their

environment and is the consequence of a process cognitive,

affective, and behavioral.

Incentive. According to (2021) Incentive in simple

terms is something that encourages a person or organization

to do or achieve something. It is something that incites or

has a tendency to incite a determination. This is usually

given in cash or in kind. In business, the objective of

incentives is to increase employee productivity, improve

industrial and interpersonal relations, and as result

increase the overall profit of the organization.

Instruction. According to Kridel (2010) The creation

and implementation of purposefully developed plans for

guiding the process by which learners gain knowledge and

understanding, and develop skills, attitudes, appreciations,

and values. Instruction is frequently associated with the

term ‘curriculum’ and generally refers to the teaching

methods and learning activities that a teacher uses to

deliver the curriculum in the classroom. The terms

‘teaching’ and ‘instruction’ are often used interchangeably.

Parental involvement. (international Journal of Early

Childhood Education and Care, v6 p41-50 2017) refers to the

amount of participation a parent has when it comes to the

schooling of his/her children. Some schools foster healthy

parental involvement, but sometimes parents have hesitations

if they will involve themselves in their children's

education.

Parents. According to Tanya Peterson (2022) Keeping

kids safe and healthy and providing basic needs are crucial

survival needs and Good parenting isn’t just a robotic

tending to the needs of a child. While this care is crucial,

it’s not the only aspect of parenting.

Stem. According to Bdavis (2022), The simplest

definition of STEM acronym is what it stands for, which is

science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The

ultimate goal of STEM education is to encourage students to

take an interest in STEM subjects at an early age. This

should be beneficial to them when they enter the jobs

market, and in turn, it should benefit the greater economy.

It is a simple definition with a straightforward goal.

Teacher. According to Teachmint teacher is a teaching

professional who is meant to help the students to gain

knowledge, competence, and virtue. The role of teachers is

to shape the students, hence it involves both, the requisite

qualification and passion for teaching. In a majority of

nations, formal teaching of students is usually carried out

by paid professional teachers.

Teacher Factors. (MEDLINE, 1966 to April 2008) were

considered the predictor, or independent variables, and

included search terms for factors such as attitudes,

beliefs, tolerance, and training. Student outcomes,

including leadership, academic achievement, social skills,

and depression were considered the dependent variables.

Teaching Style. According to Paul Thornton(2013)

The most effective teachers vary their styles depending on

the nature of the subject matter, the phase of the course,

and other factors. By so doing, they encourage and inspire

students to do their best at all times throughout the

semester.
