    Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is a technique used for quantitative determination of metals in solutions. It works by atomizing the sample using a flame or furnace and measuring the absorption of light of a specific wavelength that is specific to the metal of interest. The amount of light absorbed is directly proportional to the concentration of the metal in the sample. The instrument consists of a radiation source, sample atomizer, monochromator, detector and readout system. AAS is useful for detection of metals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and heavy metals in various samples like blood, urine, water and food products.
