LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

B U I L D I N G C O N S T RU C T I O N A N D M AT E R I A L S I V

ANJALI PATIL
YEAR: 2nd YEAR
DIV: B
DEFINITION
Lightweight concrete is a mixture made with lightweight coarse aggregates
such as shale, clay, or slate, which give it its characteristic low density.
Structural lightweight concrete has an in-place density of 90 to 115 lb/ft³,
whereas the density of regular weight concrete ranges from 140 to 150 lb/ft³.
TYPES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

•Lightweight Aggregate Concrete. In the early 1950s, the use of

lightweight concrete blocks was accepted in the UK for load bearing
inner leaf of cavity walls. ...
•Aerated Concrete. Aerated concrete has the lowest density, thermal
conductivity and strength. ...
•No Fines Concrete.
•Low density concrete
•Moderate strength concrete
•Structuralk concrete
ADVANTAGES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

1.The local industrial waste, if found suitable for lightweight concrete, can be
economically utilized.
2.The reduction in weight of concrete helps easy removal, transport and erection of
precast products.
3.The use of lightweight concrete results in the reduction of cost to the extent of
about 30 to 40 percent.
4.The lightweight concrete doesn’t present special problems with respect to freezing
and thawing. It is due to the fact that the larger pores in aggregate are unlikely to
become saturated, provided the cement paste is protected by air entrainment.
5.The lightweight concrete has comparatively less tendency to spall. Hence, its fire
resistance is greater as compared to the ordinary concrete.
6.The lightweight concrete has generally a lower thermal expansion than ordinary
concrete.
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

The only drawback of lightweight concrete is that the depth of

carbonation i.e. the depth within which corrosion can occur under
suitable conditions is nearly twice than that of normal concrete.
Hence, special care will have to be taken to provide sufficient
cover to the reinforcement of the lightweight structures to grant
protection against corrosion.
USES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

•Decks of long span bridges.

•Fire and corrosion protection.
•Covering for architectural purposes.
•Heat insulation on roofs.
•Insulation of water pipes.
•Filling for floor and roof slabs.
•Construction of partition walls and panel walls in framed
structures.
APPLICATION OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE

As Load bearing masonry walls using cellular concrete

blocks.
2. As precast floor and roof panels in all types of buildings.
3. As partition walls in all types of buildings as residential,
industrial and institutional buildings.
4. As insulating materials to exterior walls in all types of
buildings, specially in office and industrial buildings.
5. As a filler in the form of precast reinforced wall panels in
multistoryed buildings.
6. As precast composite floor or wall panels etc.

ARTIFICIAL
Artificial cinders
Iron manufacturing companies produce large amounts of by - product namely Cinders. It is named
as artificial light weight aggregate as it produces low density concretes. Investigations are carried out by
replacing the granite coarse aggregate with different percentages of cinder aggregate with water-cement
ratio 0.47.
What are cinders used for?
Cinders have been used on track surfaces and roads to provide additional traction in winter
conditions. Cinders are also employed as inorganic mulch in xeriscaping, because of excellent drainage

EXFOLIATED VERMICULATE
Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral which undergoes significant expansion when
heated. Exfoliation occurs when the mineral is heated sufficiently, and commercial furnaces can
routinely produce this effect. Vermiculite forms by the weathering or hydrothermal alteration of biotite or
phlogopite.

Vermiculite concrete is a low density non-structural construction product. It is insulating (both thermally
and acoustically) and intrinsically fire resistant. It is normally made simply by mixing exfoliated
vermiculite as the aggregate, with cement and water, plus additives such as plasticisers if required.

USES
The exfoliated Vermiculite in Construction is also used in the construction industries today and
has wide applications, one of them being used as an additive to fireproof wallboard. It is a
lightweight aggregate for plaster, proprietary concrete compounds, firestop mortar, and
cementations spray fireproofing.
