DEFINITION
Lightweight concrete is a mixture made with lightweight coarse aggregates
such as shale, clay, or slate, which give it its characteristic low density.
Structural lightweight concrete has an in-place density of 90 to 115 lb/ft³,
whereas the density of regular weight concrete ranges from 140 to 150 lb/ft³.
TYPES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE
1.The local industrial waste, if found suitable for lightweight concrete, can be
economically utilized.
2.The reduction in weight of concrete helps easy removal, transport and erection of
precast products.
3.The use of lightweight concrete results in the reduction of cost to the extent of
about 30 to 40 percent.
4.The lightweight concrete doesn’t present special problems with respect to freezing
and thawing. It is due to the fact that the larger pores in aggregate are unlikely to
become saturated, provided the cement paste is protected by air entrainment.
5.The lightweight concrete has comparatively less tendency to spall. Hence, its fire
resistance is greater as compared to the ordinary concrete.
6.The lightweight concrete has generally a lower thermal expansion than ordinary
concrete.
DISADVANTAGES OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE
Preparation
1.Gather all of your materials in one place. Make sure that your stone and water are clean.
2.Soak your dry, callused skin in warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. This will help to soften your
hardened skin. Add soap or an oil to your water for extra softening and to increase moisture. If
you’re using a pumice stone on your elbows, knees, or face, complete this step in a warm bath or
shower.

SCORIA
Scoria is a highly vesicular, dark-colored volcanic rock that may or may not contain crystals (phenocrysts).
It is typically dark in color (generally dark brown, black or purplish red), and basaltic or andesitic in
composition.
USES
Scoria has several useful characteristics that influence how it is used. It is somewhat porous, has a high
surface area and strength for its weight, and often has striking colours. Consequently, it is often used in
landscaping and drainage works. It is also commonly used in gas barbecue grills.
SAW DUST
tiny particles of wood that are formed from sawing or sanding wood.
What is sawdust used for?
A major use of sawdust is for particleboard; coarse sawdust may be used for wood pulp. Sawdust has a
variety of other practical uses, including serving as a mulch, as an alternative to clay cat litter, or as a fuel. Until
the advent of refrigeration, it was often used in icehouses to keep ice frozen during the summer.
Sawdust can be used as fertilizer in your garden. It improves the structure of the soil. ... Sawdust is low in
nitrogen, herefore it is advised to add a nitrogen fertilizer with the gift of sawdust if your plants need nitrogen
during this period.
•Make fake snow. Mix sawdust with white paint and glue
to cover holiday crafts with simulated snow.
•Get a grip.
•Soak up spills.
•Feed your plants.
•Make a fire starter.
•Fill wood holes and defects.
•Pack a path.
•Chase away weeds.
ARTIFICIAL
Artificial cinders
Iron manufacturing companies produce large amounts of by - product namely Cinders. It is named
as artificial light weight aggregate as it produces low density concretes. Investigations are carried out by
replacing the granite coarse aggregate with different percentages of cinder aggregate with water-cement
ratio 0.47.
What are cinders used for?
Cinders have been used on track surfaces and roads to provide additional traction in winter
conditions. Cinders are also employed as inorganic mulch in xeriscaping, because of excellent drainage
properties and erosion resistance. In this context, they are referred to frequently with the name "lava
rock".
USES
Rice hulls (or rice husks) are the hard protecting coverings of grains of rice. In addition to protecting rice
during the growing season, rice hulls can be put to use as building material, fertilizer, insulation material, or
fuel.
This medication is used to treat constipation. It increases the bulk in your stool, an effect that helps to cause
movement of the intestines. It also works by increasing the amount of water in the stool, making the stool
softer and easier to pass.

Coke breeze
Coke breeze is a carbon backfill which is used around impressed current anodes for underground cathodic
protection applications. It is used to: • Reduce the resistivity of the environment surrounding the anode to
increase the amount of current the anode can discharge.
USES
Coke breeze is a carbon backfill which is used around impressed current anodes for underground
cathodic protection applications. Reduce consumption of the anode since the carbon becomes the part
of the anode consumed before the anode itself. Particle size and shape are also important when
specifying a backfill.
FOAMED SLAG
The lightweight cellular material obtained by controlled processing of molten blast-
furnace slag with water, or with water and other agents such as steam or compressed air or both.
Also see blast-furnace slag.
USES
Foamed slag has been used as a lightweight aggregate for Portland cement concrete. Granulated blast
furnace slag has been used as a raw material for cemen production and as an aggregate and insulating
material. and granulated slag have also been used as sand blasting shot materials. t
USES
Common uses are in concrete blocks, concrete slabs, geotechnical
fillings, lightweight concrete, water treatment, hydroponics,
aquaponics and hydroculture.
Expanded shale is formed when the shale is crushed and fired in a rotary kiln at 2,000 F. (1,093
C.). This process causes tiny air spaces in the shale to expand. The resulting product is
called expanded or vitrified shale.
USES
Expanded shale is used by orchid and bonsai enthusiasts to create lightweight, aerating, water
retentive potting soils. It can be used with other containerized plants as well. Put a third of
the shale in the bottom of the pot and then mix the shale with potting soil 50-50 for the rest of the
container.

Expanded slate is very versatile as a building material. After cooling, the expanded shale is
fractionated into the desired grain size ranges by breaking and classifying processes. The production
without chemical additives leads to a high-quality, environmentally friendly material.
USES
expanded slate is very versatile as a building material. Due to its special nature it is
suitable for many applications in lightweight concrete, gardening and landscaping,
as Bed and as a winter litter. .

Applications for Fly Ash
Fly ash can be used as prime material in many cement-based products, such as poured concrete,
concrete block, and brick. One of the most common uses of fly ash is in Portland cement concrete
pavement or PCC pavement. Road construction projects using PCC can use a great deal of concrete,
and substituting fly ash provides significant economic benefits. Fly ash has also been used as
embankment and mine fill, and it has increasingly gained acceptance by the Federal Highway
Administration

Vermiculite concrete is a low density non-structural construction product. It is insulating (both thermally
and acoustically) and intrinsically fire resistant. It is normally made simply by mixing exfoliated
vermiculite as the aggregate, with cement and water, plus additives such as plasticisers if required.
USES
The exfoliated Vermiculite in Construction is also used in the construction industries today and
has wide applications, one of them being used as an additive to fireproof wallboard. It is a
lightweight aggregate for plaster, proprietary concrete compounds, firestop mortar, and
cementations spray fireproofing.
