I am registered nurse by profession, I graduated from nursing school in 2008.

I’ve
always wanted to be in the academe as a clinical instructor. While working in the
hospital, I learned that I can take 18 units professional education subjects and become
a licensed teacher. I passed my LET in March 2017.

When I got my PRC license I immediately applied online for jobs and was fortunate to be
hired by De La Salle Zobel around July for a contractual position.

I did my demo teaching and 3 days after I was called to sign my contract and start
reporting for work.

I was very excited to start my life as a teacher. I got the Earth Science for Grade 7
for 4 sections comprising of 40 students per class.

I was fortunate that the school/department had already prepared the lesson materials as
well as the exam before the school year started. I just need to tweak a bit what was
given to me so I can have a personal touch to it while I deliver the lesson and
activities.

Getting the attention of the students was very easy. I did not feel any awkwardness
about being a novice teacher. I was able to be in the same energy and wavelength of my
student’s generation whose interest is revolving around celebrities, movies, fashion,
social media and other trends in the society. Added perk was to experience the opulent
lifestyle of this student from rich families or celebrity household, as they are very
generous and appreciative for their teacher’s effort and care.

I was very comfortable communicating with them as English is their primary language and
was advantageous on my part to showcase my English communication skills and practice my
enunciation.

All in all the experience was very pleasing. Only 16 hours teaching load per week and
the students are well disciplined and well mannered. Although some will have
stubbornness and “kakulitan”, I was able to manage it through the help of well
establish school policy and the student coordinator officer .
